We all know that the debate surrounding Sergio Garcia’s potential return to the Ryder Cup team in 2025 has been going around for quite some time. While there is no conclusion, the golfer has said some controversial things. Garcia is Europe’s all-time leading points scorer by far and had a huge hand in ending his Ryder Cup career after joining LIV Golf and resigning from the DP World Tour in 2023.

However, a recent interview by European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald revealed that Garcia may make a comeback to the European team in 2025. And it didn’t take the golfer much time to reveal his patriotic desires, despite nothing being confirmed yet. When asked about Keegan Bradley’s name as the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, Garcia said it was a surprise, per Golf Magic. The golfer then clarified his answer by saying, “Yeah, it was a surprise, but he’s played in a few Ryder Cups and a few Presidents Cups, so he’s got good experience there,” said the 2017 Masters winner.

Bradley has participated in the 2012 Ryder Cup, posting a 4-3-0 record, and the 2014 Ryder Cup, where he ultimately lost the decisive singles match to Jamie Donaldson giving the winning point to Europe. He has also participated in the Presidents Cup this year where he helped Team USA win the trophy with a score of 18.5-11.5 as he clinched the final winning point.

However, just after saying that, Garcia said something that left the golf community’s jaw hanging. “I’m sure he’s going to do the best job he can, and I hope he does a great job and finishes second!” It seems like the Spaniard does not want the rival team to take the win, even though he is nowhere near being a part of the European squad yet. Well, if there is one thing Garcia lives for, it’s representing Europe in the Ryder Cup, that is for sure.

Talking about how he wants to make it to the European team, Garcia said at the beginning of the year, “I’m gonna be a member again of the European tour next year, so I will play my four events or something like that. So maybe if I do well in those, maybe I can get myself in somehow.”

A few days ago, Luke Donald stated that Garcia’s manager, Carlos, had hinted at a potential return of the player, but nothing came out of that. Despite that, Donald is keeping an open mind if Garcia does make it to the team.

“I saw his manager Carlos at The Open, and he mentioned something similar,” said Luke Donald, recalling a conversation he had with Garcia’s manager, but that does not speak for anything, and it sure doesn’t confirm that Garcia will be in the 2025 team. But why are we saying that? Well, the golfer has missed the deadline to reapply for DP World Tour membership and faces hefty fines of $1 million to rejoin. So, yes, while European captain Luke Donald is okay with the Spaniard’s potential return, it may not be as easy as you might think.

“The more people we have to choose from, the better,”  said Donald. He also recalled a conversation he had with Garcia after he won the LIV Golf event in Spain. “I sent Sergio a message of congrats when he won Valderrama. Outside of that, I haven’t really talked to him about specifics over whether he’s joining (the DP World Tour), but I did speak to his agent, and I know he’s been playing quite well,”  said Donald.
