Remember when Steve Williams' mistake cost Tiger Woods? How crucial are caddies in a golfer's success?

It has been over a month since Tiger Woods teed up at any competitive tournament. And the golf community has surely missed the legend. Rightfully, so! Mr. T usually makes watching the lengthy golf tournament worth it and that’s why the golf world has found an older snippet of the 15-time major winner to compensate for his absence from the greens.

The Ryder Cup posted a blast-from-the-past video on YouTube about the time when Woods’s former caddie, Steve Williams, made a crucial mistake. But all was fine, as the 48-year-old laughed about it. Rolling it back to the 2006 season, Woods was making his fifth Ryder Cup appearance at The K Club in Ireland. It was during the singles against Robert Karlsson that Woods was making a put at the par-3 7th green.

Williams was cleaning the Nike Forged Blade 9 iron when he slipped and had to let go of the club in the water. Eventually, the 82-time PGA Tour winner won 3&2 against Karlsson, but Team USA still lost. Nonetheless, the moment Williams lost the club in the water was forever captured as it made Woods smile the widest, which he rarely did in the 2000s. Not when he was focused on the game.

Everyone knows that in the 2000s, Tiger Woods was a force to be reckoned with and he would rarely show his emotions so that no one could get in his head and divert his attention. Just as his father, Earl Woods had taught him. But after Steve Williams lost the 9 Iron, Woods was probably surprised and laughed at the situation, which was a surprise for the fans too. As this fan admiringly said, “Seeing Tiger smile is so good.”

At the 7th green, the lost iron did not disturb Woods and thus, he did not react angrily. This user loved it as they said, “The fact that Tiger is so calm and still smile is that he knows what it takes being a caddy.” And another fan noticed the same thing that Mr. T was not bothered by the dropped club, probably because he had another. They commented,Tiger didn’t blink an eye.”

However, the story took a turn as they moved to the 8th hole. Williams shared the after scene at the Chasing Majors podcast. The Kiwi looper revealed that at the next hole, Woods needed the 9 iron for the second shot. But as he had lost it, he reminded him of what happened at the lake. Woods looked at him and said, “You f***ing clown. Only you!” So, the 48-year-old was not furious at that moment but afterward, he did lose his cool a bit.

In the end, Woods did get the 9 iron back but it was not until the 15th hole. By that time, the 48-year-old had full control of the match and he didn’t need the club anymore. The K Club had called a professional diver as the river was 15 feet deep to retrieve the club. But this fan was watching the match at that time and the club probably had gone missing. As they jokingly said, “I would have just jumped in and swam away.”

Williams had shared that he was wetting the towel to clean the 9 iron but in that moment he was forced to make a choice. The veteran caddie said that he had to let himself go in River Liffey or the club and he obviously chose the former. But this fan still wondered, “Dude how do you not grab it in time? the clubs aren’t made out of led [sic lead].” Williams’s explanation may help the fan understand why he had to let go of the 9 iron.

Even though the iconic Woods and Williams duo have parted ways and can’t be seen together now, their past moments keep the fans entertained!
