Scottie Scheffler's kindness over cash—Is this the sportsmanship we need more of today?

Despite Scottie Scheffler’s close shave of failing to get a $3.6 million payday at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship, he has become the people’s champion. The golfer, who is 28 years old and finished fourth in the competition, gained recognition for his impressive performance and also a touching emotional moment that resonated with many. In the middle of the intense competition and the pressure of winning, Scheffler’s humanity is evident, which shows that there is more to his story than the wins and the money.

In the last round, Scheffler was in contention for the top position in the tournament. But it was another kind of fight going on out of the sight of the golf course that would turn out to be decisive. On the 18th green, Scheffler and his caddie, Ted Scott, briefly let their concentration go to greet nine-year-old Liliana.

This young girl, who had liver cancer, battled it and also had a liver transplant, radiation, and chemotherapy. The PGA Tour recorded the act and in a tweet, they said, “@ScottieScheffler and Ted Scott made time for 9-year-old Liliana on the 18th green @FedExChamp.” As Liliana returns to her active lifestyle, Scheffler’s act is an inspiring addition to her story.
