Right now, Jack Nicklaus‘s record looks to be safe. Which record you ask, since he has so many to his name? The record of three PLAYERS Championship titles. Scottie Scheffler is at two right now, and he’s currently fighting for his third. A third straight title, if we might add. However, he is languishing at T16 with a 5 under par score and 7 strokes off the leader, JJ Spaun, after 54 holes. A brilliant performance needs to come from the two-time Masters champion to complete the three-peat; however, he will have to battle adverse weather conditions and pairing changes on Day 4.

He had the chance to close the gap on Day 3, but he recorded a par score throughout the day, scoring three bogeys and balancing it with three birdies. The World number 1, who is regularly used to success, more so after the spectacular 2024 season, seems to be hitting a tipping point after an incident during one of the crucial holes of his 2025 PLAYERS campaign involving the wind. One tip for Scheffler: he better get used to the wind, as it is projected to get stronger on Sunday.

So what happened? Well, on Saturday, on the 16 hole on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, Scheffler was readying his approach. he was aiming for the green, and the ball was nearly 44 yards from the hole. His chip landed on the far side of the green and trickled out onto the fairway, to the left side of the hole.

Scheffler had expected the strong wind to carry the ball to the right side and closer to the hole, hence, he shot it a little bit to the left side. But the wind failed to alter the trajectory of the ball, leaving him frustrated. “How does the wind not move it at all that way?” asked an exasperated Scheffler. The wind, which was according to Scheffler, moving at 30 miles per hour, failed to make a significant impact on the chip.

The shot and the reaction prompted some hilarious responses from the fans who compared Scheffler’s antics at the TPC Sawgrass to their amateur golfmanship.

Fans poke fun at Scottie Scheffler’s reaction

One fan posted a GIF that said “One of us,” possibly drawing a relation to the fact that Scottie Scheffler is just like an avid golfer, prone to bad shots and making excuses while he is at it. A stamp of an amateur golfer. Another netizen also joined the same causes, commenting, “Excuses, excuses,” referring to Scheffler’s annoyance at the wind leaving his ball alone. Lately, #1 has been showing hints of frustration because he has not been able to get back in the winner’s circle. It seems his wrist injury, that he endured while preparing Ravioli on Christmas has derailed his momentum.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Scottie Scheffler's frustration justified, or is he just making excuses for his poor performance?

Another fan also seconded the reaction, stating that the wind is a huge deal at his golf course where he practices. Jokingly, he tried to draw a similar line between himself and the world No. 1. “Haha yeah, Scotty. I think the same thing at my local course.”

One fan was not a particular fan of the two-time major winner using excuses to defend his wayward shot. The fan stated that Scheffler is always finding reasons to complain while taking a bad shot. Safe to say that he will not be getting a card from Scottie Scheffler anytime soon. “Scottie is such a baby, always whining.” There have been instances of Scheffler losing his calm on the course after hitting a bad shot.

At the US Open last year, on Saturday, when his opening drive at the 17th veered left, Scheffler muttered to himself in the second person, “Maybe the worst golf shot I think I’ve ever seen you hit.” After a repeat outcome on the par 3rd- 15th, he slammed his driver on the ground before picking up his tee and throwing it.

At the WM Phoenix this year, in the third round, he was two-under at the midway point. But after a disappointing effort on the 15th hole, he let his frustration boil over. Approaching his bag, Scheffler struck it with his club. So, whining? Yeah, pretty much.

The lack of consistency because of the late Tour start this season was evident at the PLAYERS Championship as well. He is still far from his best, which one fan sees clearly. “Scottie’s just fallen off really hard; the weather has nothing to do with it,” stated the fan.

What do you think of the shot by Scottie Scheffler? Do you think that the wind played a role in it being a wayward shot, or is it just an excuse from the #1 to cover up his mistake?
