Sitting down on Live from the Interview Room at Augusta National for a Pre-Tournament press conference, everyone had a lot of questions for the defending champion, Scottie Scheffler. The reporters wanted to know about his form, his expectations, what he thought of the other players, and more. But one that caught some attention was, “How do you approach this week from a mental perspective and kind of managing that pressure knowing that you’re the defending champion?”
Coming in as the 2024 champion, everyone expects Scottie Scheffler to dominate the field. Especially after the incredible season he had last year. But Mr. Inevitable has something else in his mind based on his response in the interview. He replied, “At the end of the day, when I tee it up on Thursday, I start the tournament even par just like everybody else. Last year doesn’t have a lot to do with this year, outside of I can go back on some of the experience that I’ve had playing well on this golf course and reflect on that.”
The 13x PGA Tour winner knows that his 2024 win means nothing this Thursday. And he wasn’t afraid to admit it. He has the same shot as everyone else at Augusta National to win the Green Jacket on April 13, 2025. Elaborating on his frame of mind, Scheffler added, “Let’s say I get off to a bad start on Thursday, and I can use some stuff that I’ve done here the past few years as confidence to kind of turn things around. But at the end of the day, when I step on there on Thursday, we’re at even par, and it’s a totally new golf tournament. Last year means nothing.”

Whether you consider it honesty, reality, or caution, Scheffler is not going to let his win from 2024 get in his head, it seems. Especially since he is already struggling this season. Based on his recent form, what are the chances of Scottie Scheffler retaining the title?

Can Scottie Scheffler win the 2025 Masters Tournament?
Based on his recent form, Scottie Scheffler isn’t the best pick for the 2025 Masters Tournament. Over the six appearances he has made, he has failed to win a single event. There was also a glimmer of hope in the revival of his form in the second round of the Houston Open, where he scored the course record low of 8-under 62. But that too didn’t result in a victory. Despite that, it was Scheffler’s best run so far, where he finished as a runner-up two strokes behind the eventual winner.

However, he has been nothing but overly dramatic in 2025. After a series of losses, Scheffler threw tantrums on the course. But some still have faith in his abilities. Jon Rahm believes #1 is the best player at the moment, comparing him to Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. Rahmbo also stated that he would like to compete with Scheffler more frequently shortly.
All eyes will be on Scottie Scheffler. But he is only focused on overcoming the field, just like everyone else. Do you think that’s the right approach to playing in the 2025 Masters Tournament? Share your views in the comments section.
