How good do you need to be to impress Scottie Scheffler? The world no. 1 stepped onto the course with some of his buddies recently. Trying to find his form before the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler was eager to up his game days before the event. However, things didn’t go as planned for the 2024 Player of the Year. He ended up losing to one of his friends. Interestingly, that said friend is not a professional golfer himself.
In fact, this alleged buddy of Scheffler, who beat him on the course, is a 10-handicap. And he’s not that good of a golfer, as per the drama slayer himself. Golf Digest interviewed Scheffler during a pre-tournament press conference a few hours ago. During the interview, the world no. 1 confessed, “I played last weekend and one of my buddies, who is not a very good golfer, he’s like a 10-handicap. He beat me in our side bet for the day”. It’s exciting to see even the best of the best get humbled at times. However, Scheffler calling his 10-handicap buddy “not a very good golfer” is not what the fans expected to hear.
For context, a 10-handicap is still considered a good mid-level golfer. They get the opportunity to participate in lower-level Tours and rise up the rankings like everyone else. Many famous celebrities are also 10-handicaps like Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, and more. So it’s certainly no small feat, even for a non-regular.

Perhaps that is why some fans were shocked by what Scottie Scheffler said. And they didn’t shy away from speaking their minds about the situation.
Scottie Scheffler’s statement shocks fans
The world no. 1 certainly has higher expectations from everyone around him. That didn’t stop one fan from commenting, “Who is not a very good golfer, is like a 10 handicap” cut right through my heart. I’m dead inside”. The statement certainly hurt the casual golfer. Perhaps they should up their game to match up with Scheffler’s expectations from an amateur player.

What’s your perspective on:
Is calling a 10-handicap 'not very good' fair, or is Scheffler setting the bar too high?
Have an interesting take?
One of the comments read “Buddies ego is probably off the roofs after that”. Scottie Scheffler’s friend would certainly be on cloud 9, especially after knowing what the 13x PGA Tour winner thinks of him. This might have given other 10-handicaps the hope that they too might be able to beat the world no. 1.
There was someone who mentioned “Scottie crushing all us 10 handicaps who thought we were something 😔”. It seems their egos have been burst by none other than the current best golfer in the world. Well, they shouldn’t put themselves down too much considering who Scheffler frequents with. After all, when you’re playing against Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele every week, then you are bound to consider a 10-handicap “not a very good golfer”.
“I would give a lot to be a 10.”, said a fan as they really wish to reach the goal in life. Unfortunately, they would still not be considered as good golfers in Scottie Scheffler’s books. Maybe they should aim higher. Perhaps even a PGA Tour card if they want to impress Mr. Inevitable.

Another fan gave an overview of the comment section as they said “Broke a million hearts saying his 10hcp mate “is not a very good golfer” 😂😂😂😂”. Frankly, everyone’s feelings towards this statement are understandable. But fighting with the world no. 1 will always be a losing battle for every 10-handicap out there.
