The market is down! The Showdown was the perfect end-of-the-year event that drew in a lot of fans. The event hosted by Crypto.com saw Rory McIlroy & Scottie Scheffler defeat their LIV Golf counterparts to take home golf’s first-ever digital reward. But how beneficial was it?
Rory McIlroy & Scottie Scheffler‘s ‘Crypto’ winnings dropped in value from the time they received. And it was not even a small loss. Both pros lost about $25,000 from the $10 million. A tweet was shared by Nosferatu showcasing the prize chart of the currency they were awarded. It also featured the prize difference at the exact moments when both individuals received the prize at the Shadow Creek Golf Course.
The tweet was in response to a tweet shared by @BleacherReport a few hours ago that featured a video of the PGA Tour pros receiving their respective winnings after their The Showdown victory. During the ceremony, the #1 stated that he didn’t know much about crypto but this would motivate him to learn about it; “You know I don’t know a whole lot about crypto, but this is some good motivation to do some research,” after collecting his winnings.

By the time Scottie got his prize, the "10 million" were already worth about $25,000 less than when Rory got his… #cashit 🤦♂️ https://t.co/qdqvIqrQlt pic.twitter.com/vPmwt7ptF1

The losses may be big, but the overall prize itself was emphatic enough for the players to ignore the negative. But how did the duo of Scheffler & McIlroy manage to win against their LIV Golf adversaries? Well, it might be because of the poor relationship between their opponents in the event.
Scottie Scheffler & Rory McIlroy’s unfair advantage
Going into the event, fans expected the four competitors to be at each other’s necks. Scottie Scheffler & Rory McIlroy had a dominating season in the PGA Tour & DP World Tour respectively. Both individuals won the highest honors available in the leagues. Bryson DeChambeau & Brooks Koepka also had a fairly good 2024. Despite not winning much in LIV Golf, they still showed consistency. DeChambeau particularly had wins outside of the Saudi-based league as he captured the 2024 U.S. Open.

However, what set both teams apart was their dynamic with their fellow team members. While Scheffler & McIlroy share mutual respect and a great repo with each other, that was not the case for team LIV Golf. Bryson DeChambeau & Brooks Koepka have always had a difficult relationship. Their spat back in 2019 has dragged on for years. And even though reports suggested that they had settled their differences since joining LIV Golf, a recent video featuring the two painted a different story. Maybe that’s why they were not able to gain the upper hand over Scheffler & McIlroy in the foursome & fourball legs of the 18 holes. By the time the 4 were battling on individual scores, team LIV Golf were already on the brink of a loss.
