After months of delay, the brainchild of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy has finally come to action. And, it is needless to say that it has managed to grab the attention of the entire golf community, because of the star-studded players. From the owners to players like Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele, and Keegan Bradley, they have got all the fan-favorite golfers.

However, the field does not have the World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. To begin with, despite three events already concluded, he is yet to begin his 2025 season. This weekend at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will be his first event. That is because he injured himself during Christmas dinner and had to undergo surgery. But is the injury the reason behind his absence from TGL? Not really, because the groups were announced long back.

When asked if he intended to follow TGL or participate in it, he said, “I haven’t watched much of it. I did catch it — I was working out in the trailer last night and it was on. I had heard the first two matches weren’t very close, but last night was pretty exciting, it was good for them to have a close match. 2 I watched like five minutes of the first one one night. I turned on like ESPN, I was rocking Bennett to sleep like late at night and turned it on, caught quite a bit.” The match that he is referring to is the one between Boston Common Golf and Jupiter Links Golf Club.

Both the owners went against each other, and it was a pretty interesting match. The round had to go through over time to conclude, and this was the first time. “I think it’s interesting, I think it’s good energy for the sport. I think maybe some new people are getting interested in golf. But overall I haven’t paid too much attention to it, but last night was good,” he added at the post-round Presser of the second Signature event of the PGA Tour. So, he might not be playing this season, but he is still keeping track of the event, so he might end up playing the next season.

While TGL has all the big names, Scottie Scheffler is not the only star player who is not a part of the league. Even Jordan Spieth is not there. But why is it so?

Jordan Spieth’s family commitment might have kept him away from TGL

Jordan Spieth, a three-time Major winner, is another player whose growing family commitments likely played a role in him initially passing on a spot in the TGL. His wife, Annie, gave birth to their second child just before the 2023 Ryder Cup, adding to his off-course responsibilities. Adding to that, Spieth’s ongoing wrist injury, which eventually required surgery at the end of 2024, created another hurdle for his participation.

Though he’s set to return to the PGA Tour in early 2025, even a few extra hours of play would have conflicted with his recovery and rehab plans. While Spieth’s involvement in the TGL seems unlikely in the short term, there’s still a strong chance he could join the league down the road. His close friendship with Justin Thomas, along with his bond with other American players and Ryder Cup rivals, would certainly bring a new dynamic to the TGL and elevate the entertainment factor for fans.

Do you think both of these players will be part of the second edition of TGL? Let us know in the comments section below!
