Is Scottie Scheffler's putting problem a temporary glitch or a sign of deeper issues in his game?

Golf’s reigning king faces an unlikely test. As Scottie Scheffler is playing at the Presidents Cup, his impressive resume boasts 13 PGA Tour wins, including two majors. His 2024 season has been nothing less than a dream, with back-to-back wins and gold at the Olympics. He has a stellar 36.84% win rate this season on the PGA Tour. However, a closer look at his team event record, especially in foursomes, reveals a surprising vulnerability.

His struggles in this format have raised eyebrows, sparking debate among golf enthusiasts. Recently, a striking post on social media platform X highlighted a staggering statistic. The tweet said Scottie Scheffler has lost every foursome match he’s played in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. It’s hard to digest, but yes! This unexpected revelation sent shockwaves through the golf community, prompting fans and analysts to question the world No. 1’s teamwork dynamics.

It gained further relevance on Friday in Montreal when Scheffler and playing partner Russell Henley suffered a heartbreaking 1 UP loss to Si Woo Kim and Byeong Hun An in the foursomes event. The daunting trend continued, fueling concerns and questions about his ability to break this curse. Additionally, his Presidents Cup debut in 2022 didn’t bring better fortunes.

It presented new challenges as paired with Sam Burns; Scheffler encountered Si Woo Kim and Cam Davis on Day 1. But, through trials and tribulations, the American pair ultimately fell 2 UP in Thursday’s foursome. Again on Saturday morning, Korean Lee Kyoung-hoon and young Tom Kim edged Scheffler and Burns 2 & 1. Despite these setbacks, Scheffler’s camaraderie with Burns remained unbroken.

But what’s behind this puzzling paradox? As the world’s No. 1 golfer strives for team glory, one question lingers: Can Scheffler overcome his foursomes famine?

Scottie Scheffler’s past statistics tell the story

Delving into Scheffler’s team event history reveals a concerning trend. It started with a draw in his debut at the 2020 Ryder Cup. He was paired with Bryson DeChambeau. They fought hard, halving Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton in Friday’s foursomes. Though they didn’t clinch the win, his first Ryder Cup experience was worth noticing. But it was Scheffler’s Sunday singles triumph over Rahm that fueled the US team’s dominating 19-9 victory. He won 4 & 3.

Fast-forward to the 2023 Ryder Cup and Scheffler faced familiar foes. However, this time he suffered consecutive foursome defeats. First, Rahm and Hatton beat him and Sam Burns with a tight 4 & 3 finish. The next day, Ludvig Aberg and the Norwegian, Viktor Hovland, handed Scheffler and Brooks Koepka a historic 9 & 7 loss.
