The Ryder Cup weekend is all about entertainment for the golf community. The event has the highest standards when it comes to the quality of golf. What makes the Ryder Cup truly unique is the urge amongst both the American and European teams to grab the highest patriotic honor for their countries.
As the Ryder Cup nears its end, the rivalries on and off the course are gaining more and more prominence. The recent feud that came to light was from the parking lot between Justin Thomas’ current caddy Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, and Europe’s star player Rory McIlroy. Mackay used to be the caddy for Phil Mickelson; however, both parted ways on a bad note earlier this year. Let’s relive the feud.
Why did Jim Bones Mackay Split With Phil Mickelson?
Phil Mickelson had Mackay on his bag for 25 years. However, they decided to mutually part ways in April this year. In a press conference, Phil Mickelson pointed out that this was not due to a single incident but because it was the right time for a change.
Phil Mickelson also made various promises to his caddie about the percentage disbursement of the bonuses he won during various events. However, he failed to pay his caddy’s share for nearly a decade.
According to Mackay’s calculations, the LIV Golf defector owes him $900,000. It was also pointed out that Phil Mickelson paid him $400,000 off the owed FedEx Cup debt. Despite the payment, Bones was disappointed that he did not receive the full share.
Mackay was increasingly frustrated with Mickelson’s habit of showing up late at the golf course, which did not align with the professional’s expectations from a caddie-player relationship. Additionally, Mickelson was not always receptive to Mackay’s advice, which added to the tension between them.
