The Ryder Cup trophy: A dream come true

The trophy for the international tournament, the Ryder Cup, was first presented at Worcester County Club in 1927 as a winning cup to be bagged by either Europe or the USA. In 1927, it was won by the USA in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The cup was first commissioned by England’s seed merchant Samuel A. Ryder for Mappin’ & Webb Co., who designed the cup for 250 pounds, which was worth approximately $21,000 in 2020. Then, Ryder presented the coveted award to the Professional Golfers’ Association of Great Britain and Ireland.

Added to that, the patriotic honor is crafted with intricate detailing and is made of gold. By length, it is 17 inches, and by width, it measures nine inches. Apart from this, its weight is four pounds according to the Ryder Cup official page

Though the Ryder Cup was named after Samuel A. Ryder, the face carved on the cup is that of somebody else. It is actually Abe Mitchell, who was one of the best golfers Britain had in 1920. The original trophy is housed at the PGA (Great Britain and Ireland) and the winning team is given a replica. That was all about the trophy. Now, while the audience watches the match for long hours, they might feel famished. Let’s take a look at the Ryder Cup food menu.
