Nobody could have predicted when LIV Golf first started that it would eventually cause major problems for several other circuits, including the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. The explanation was straightforward: LIV Golf began to draw in a lot of well-known players because of the substantial prize money and more flexible scheduling than any other series.

These players have received a lot of criticism for their decisions, and some have even been penalized by prior tours. However, Ryder Cup veteran Sergio Garcia‘s decision to play in LIV golf cost him a spot on the European squad, for which he made desperate attempts but ultimately fell short.

Sergio Garcia is one of the most renowned Ryder Cup veterans. In his ten appearances, he has amassed more points than any other player in the history of the tournament. His very presence was enough to give the opposing squad cause for alarm, while his inclusion in the roster offered the European team reason for optimism. This time around, though, it is different.

Garcia and several others were penalized from the DP World Tour after switching to LIV Golf. The Spaniard turned in his tour card in May after refusing to pay a $1,22,541 punishment. The circuit simply decided not to consider providing him a spot in the 44th Ryder Cup edition since he is no longer a member of the DP World Tour.

When the king is removed from the throne, he will make every effort to claim power. This is how Garcia must have felt, and for that, he made every last effort to be on the team. According to reports, Garcia has made a last-ditch attempt to play in the Ryder Cup by offering to pay his LIV Golf fines. He allegedly phoned DP World Tour chief executive Keith Pelley, whose answer was ‘no chance’.

Seeking a last-minute redemption got no fruit for Garcia. And for this golfer, the Ryder Cup has moved on from the legendary Spaniard.

The game has moved on and doesn’t need Garcia anymore

Garcia’s absence from the squad must have alarmed others.

Jon Rahm backed Garcia as well because he understood how crucial it was for the European Ryder Cup squad to have the veteran given his impressive resume.

However, for the British golf legend Nick Faldo, the scenario is different. For him, the Ryder Cup and the European team don’t need Garcia anymore. “They’re in a different world now; they have left the tour and haven’t supported the Tour, so hey, they are done and that’s it. The team has moved on, the game has moved on, and Team Europe is fantastic. I don’t think they could do anything better,” said the former Ryder Cup captain.
