What did Rory McIlroy say about LIV Golf ranking points?
In his latest press conference, McIlroy was quizzed on the recent developments surrounding LIV Golf and the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), the organizational body that gives points to professional golfers and maintains standings throughout the season.

For the unversed, the LIV golfers had sent a collective letter to Mr. Peter Dawson, the chairman of the board at OWGR. While the contents of the letter remain a mystery, it is well known about the rebel league’s thrust for gaining points which directly leads to a position in the official points standing.
When quizzed on the event, a usually no-nonsense McIlroy chose to be diplomatic. “I certainly would want the best players in the world ranked accordingly,” he said, before describing LIV counterpart Dustin Johnson’s position in the standings.
“If Dustin Johnson is somewhere around 100th in the world, it’s not an accurate reflection of where he is in the game. But at the same time, you can’t make up your own rules,” he said. The World No.2 also wanted a criterion for the event to be awarded ranking points.

“So I certainly have no problem with them getting World Ranking points,” he continued. “But you have to meet the criteria. If you don’t do that, it’s hard to justify why you should have them.”
Fans react to McIlroy’s comments
Dustin Johnson’s stunning performances in the inaugural LIV season have made heads turn. The recent appraisal comes from McIlroy, who knows all too well that Johnson is anything but a 100th-ranked player.
Fans, however, were in opposition to McIlroy’s wishes. The LIV Golf Series has been facing a major backlash from traditional supporters since its inception. Here is a selection of tweets against LIV Golf’s backing:
No real point paying any attention to him. He’ll say something different in a few days. He must be dizzy with all his u-turns and contradictions.

The only reason Rory is wrong is that DJ should not be ranked period when he is not a member of a real tour. His “ranking” is no more relevant than mine.

So basically do the same boring thingy as we already have week in, week out.

The arrival of ranking points will add to LIV Golf’s appeal as another legitimate Tour on the golf circuit. A few fans sided for fair competition too, arguing that players like Johnson were starved of a good ranking due to the noise around the league.
Totally agree . DJ is a great golfer but he made the decision to go to LIV which does not adhere to current rules to establish world rankings. If someone in LIV told him otherwise, shame on all of them. LIV does not have the right to make all these demands. Rules are rules 😀😀

Totally agree. We all know DJ is one of the top players in the world, but how do you determine where he’s slotted playing 3 round tournaments against a glorified Champions Tour field?

OWGR will come eventually. As MF said earlier, it takes a year or 2 to get the application through and the players who signed for LIV knew that. Sounds like GN sold them an empty dream

PGA have monopolised golf for a long time. Why does #45 in the world have to qualify for the PGA tour?
Imagine if golf was truly international like tennis was?
It’s not even an American game.

Whatever the case may be, it remains to be seen whether LIV Golf is backed by OWGR. However, by the looks of the LIV-PGA court battle, a settlement seems a far-fetched dream.
