The PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series have been at odds since the inception of the rival tour. With excellent contracts and significant signing bonuses, LIV Golf has managed to draw several talented athletes away from the PGA Tour. And owing to the new rules that LIV Golf brings, there are numerous legal disputes ongoing between the two tours regarding various unresolved issues. Some even speculate that this conflict may have a negative impact on golf.

The fact that players keep switching over to LIV Golf continues to spark a never-ending discussion, outrage, and legal battle for their future endeavors. But the most iconic setback for LIV golfers is that they are not being awarded points by the Official World Golf Ranking. This is considerably affecting their world ranking. A few of the requirements or rules the OWGR follows entail possessing a qualifying school or access, as well as 36-hole cuts. For the time being, LIV Golf does not have a cut or weekly qualifying.

LIV Golf Nation recently posted a contentious tweet on its official Twitter account, saying: “If the OWGR started awarding LIV golfers points, there would be a mass exodus of top golfers leaving the PGA Tour for LIV. That’s the only reason the OWGR has not already approved LIV’s application.”

Many fans took the opportunity to put their remarks under the argument. One wrote: “And what would happen to the 30 stiffs the PGA guys would replace, where would they go play? Senior tour, Asian tour? At least you admit Liv is 10-12 good golfers beating mediocre opponents every tournament! Kramer at the dojo basically! No thanks”

Another fan commented: “Totally not true and absolutely moronic to say. If LIV were so great everyone would leave, and then OWGR would mean nothing and cease to exist. But the all the players aren’t leaving.”

One fan wrote: “Rubbish . It’s because the PGAT tv revenue is linked to owgr”

One user commented: “You clearly don’t understand why people didn’t leave the PGA in mass exodus to LIV. Hint: it’s not about a ranking. Lol.”

The OWGR significance to LIV Golf’s long-term success

LIV CEO Greg Norman, announced that the upstart tour has applied for OWGR points. The OWGR world includes more than two dozen tours, and LIV Golf aims to seek the same validation.

One factor used to determine eligibility for golf’s four major championships is the OWGR. Several players who switched to the new tour are currently eligible for major exemptions merely based on their corresponding world rankings. Others, such as past Masters champions, are excluded from competition—at least temporarily; Augusta National hasn’t determined whether it will continue to welcome its winners to compete. No matter how large the payouts are, the LIV golfers’ appeal may decline if they are unable to accumulate points, which will cause their rankings to decline and finally cause them to lose their entry into major tournaments.

However, the only incentive LIV Golf currently offers to prospective participants is large prize money. Do you think LIV will enter the Official World Golf Ranking any time soon? Let us know your take in the comments below.
