Can Rory McIlroy's TaylorMade gear finally break his winless streak this season?

Rory McIlroy is a name that speaks volumes in the golf world, and his performance on the DP World Tour has been no exception. Although he hasn’t secured a win in the past couple of weeks, McIlroy summed it up well: Two weeks in a row I’ve played well, just not quite well enough. But with the finish line in sight, his winless streak may finally come to an end.

With the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the DP World Tour Championship still ahead, McIlroy’s got a real shot at ending the year with a win. The stakes are high, and the pressure is on—because when you’re considered one of golf’s greatest, expectations are always through the roof. But it’s not just about his skill and mental game; there’s also the gear that’s helping keep him sharp and ready for the challenge.

McIlroy is famously particular about his equipment. Over time, the Northern Irishman has made some adjustments in his bag to ensure he’s at his absolute best. Currently, he uses almost a full bag of TaylorMade clubs.

McIlroy’s driver of choice? The TaylorMade Qi10! He uses the 9° one but dialed down to 8.25°, and paired with a Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft. What’s interesting, though, is that he’s gone back to a longer 45-inch shaft. For years, he’d shortened it to 44 inches to tighten up his dispersion off the tee.

I played 45 (inch driver shaft) for most of my career, so I just felt like there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to hit a driver that’s 45 inches and control it, McIlroy explained. The Qi10’s larger profile has made it easier for him to find the sweet spot, giving him the confidence to make the change without sacrificing accuracy.

McIlroy snagged his first win of 2024 with the Qi10 in hand at the Dubai Desert Classic. With a price tag of $599.99, it’s definitely a premium piece of gear—but for the Northern Irishman, it seems to be worth every penny.

Have an interesting take?

McIlroy’s fairway woods are just as crucial to his power game as his driver. He’s got the TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood (15°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 8X shaft and the Qi10 5-wood (18°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 9X shaft, each going for $349.99. His 3-wood is dialed in for distance, which perfectly suits his knack for hitting farther than most. And while his driver usually gets all the attention, his fairway woods are just as impressive, letting him cover serious ground from the turf.

For irons, he’s rolling with a TaylorMade P Series Proto 4-iron alongside his custom TaylorMade Rors Proto Irons (5-9), all paired with Project X Rifle 7.0 shafts. This set doesn’t come cheap, running about $1,399.99, but for McIlroy, it’s all about finding the right tools to stay sharp.

What is McIlroy’s choice for his short game?

When it comes to wedges, Rory McIlroy likes to mix things up, combining TaylorMade and Titleist for a versatile setup. His main wedges are from the TaylorMade MG4 series—46° (09SB), 50° (09SB), and 54° (11SB), each priced at $179.99. He added these 4th-generation Milled Grind 4 wedges to his bag in 2024, all in the name of refining his short game.

But for his lob wedge, he turns to a Titleist classic: the Vokey Design WedgeWorks 58° set to 59° (K) for $149.98, the only non-TaylorMade club in his lineup. This one’s essential for his precision around the greens.

As for putting, McIlroy trusts the TaylorMade Spider Tour X3 with a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour grip, retailing at $254.99. Known for its stability, this putter gives him the control he needs to nail those crucial putts. And of course, no setup is complete without the right ball. He plays with the TaylorMade TP5x, priced at $49.95 per dozen, for that reliable performance on every shot.
