Rory McIlroy reveals what transpired between him and Sergio Garcia

The 33-year-old shared a close bond with Garcia – he was even a groomsman for Garcia’s wedding. But the arrival of the LIV Golf Series pitted the pair on opposite sides, from which both had a different perspective.

For starters, McIlroy vehemently opposed the idea of a rebel league, standing firmly with his existing tours. However, veteran golfer Garcia, who the British golfer idolizes, chose to pursue new avenues alongside accepting a hefty paycheck.

However, Garcia was honest with his decision, informing McIlroy of his switch at the Wells Fargo Championship back in May. Apparently, he was eager to give the four-time major championship winner a ride on his brand-new plane. The destination? The first event of LIV Golf’s inaugural season in London.

Words and texts hurt McIlroy-Garcia’s relationship

Shortly afterward, McIlroy won the 2022 RBC Canadian Open with a two-stroke victory at the George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto. Brimming with confidence, the 33-year-old lashed out at the Saudi-backed series, which continued ahead of the U.S. Open.

In one of his interviews, McIlroy stated that LIV players had taken the “easy way out” for their own convenience. Garcia, who failed to make the cut at the tournament, was at unease with the comments, and choose to let it out with a text.

When McIlroy woke up on Friday morning in the U.S. Open week, he was at the opposite end of Garcia’s message. According to the former, the text was “basically telling me to shut up about LIV, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.”

The British golfer didn’t hold back at the remarks. “I was pretty offended and sent him back a couple of daggers and that was it,” McIlroy said. That proved to be the final word between the pair, with both set on separate paths with their golf careers.
