This summer has been a little difficult for Rory McIlroy, who might not be performing as per his own standards. He last played the Northern Trust earlier this month, delivering a T43 finish–13 strokes behind Tony Finau. Adding to that, this is the first time since 2009 that he has slipped out of the Top 15 in the world ranking. Ready for the BMW Championship next, McIlroy admitted to being tired of his schedule.

His frustration, however, resulted in him throwing 3-wood into the New Jersey Turnpike.

The 32-year-old was also seen practicing at the Caves Valley Golf Club. Reports explained he was getting used to a new driver and fairway woods. McIlroy, though tired, is looking to improve as he plays the BMW Championship.

Why did Rory McIlroy throw the 3-way wood while at Liberty National?

“I threw my 3-wood onto the New Jersey Turnpike off the 9th hole yesterday, or on Monday, and so I was without a 3-wood coming here,” McIlroy said. He even clarified where he threw it, indicating that the club must not have reached the highway. “I mightn’t have reached the road, but I threw it into the trees off the ninth tee at Liberty National”.

So if anyone needs a 3-way wood, they can probably find one there.

After the last event, McIlroy is currently placed 28th on the FedExCup Standings and should be able to play the season-ending Tour Championship.

While his frustration and exhaustion are visible, many fans are vocal about his littering at the course. “Did Rory McIlroy admit to littering,” one user wrote, while some wondered how much would it sell for if found. Some thought it could have been given away to a young golfer, while some joked about going to actually look for it.

Besides this, McIlroy spoke to Golf Digest about being tired and is ready for the break after the Tour Championship ends. It’ll help him feel rested, returning fresh for the Ryder Cup. “End of the season, there’s been a lot of golf. Yeah, so a lot of travel,” he said, adding that others must also be jaded by now.

He agreed to be playing day to day not, doing what he can. McIlroy knows that he needs a good finish, despite the low energy he admits to feeling.
