While the whole golf community is torn between PGA Tour and LIV Golf, there’s one golf league that has swept a greater viewership on YouTube. No, if you just thought about the DP World Tour, you are wrong. Led by Phil Harrison, the Legends Tour has now created a considerable gap between its subscribers and those of the PGA Tour. But if you were to build a leaderboard of all major golf tours, how would it look?
Paul McGinley, a professional golfer and broadcaster at SkySports Golf, recently pointed out the present state of viewership across the major golf leagues. On his X handle, he congratulated the Legends Tour. He stated, “This is quite incredible and a hearty very well done to all @euLegendsTour 👏💪” But along with his wishes, he has also portrayed a list that includes all the tours and their present number of subscribers.

While the PGA Tour is far behind in terms of subscribers, it has an impressive 1689 million views from 20,481 videos. Legends Tour has 20.35 million views from only 962 videos. Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that the PGA Tour’s YouTube channel emerged in 2006, while the Legends Tour showed up in the latter half of 2020.
The difference between the PGA Tour and the Legends Tour is only about 0.34 million. But what kind of content from each of these Tours’ YouTube channels is the most popular? While the Legends Tour’s most-viewed video to date is a highlight of the final round of the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship 2024, the PGA Tour’s most-viewed content dates back three years. It covers the moment when wrestler Goldberg tossed a fan into the water.
Most of the PGA Tour’s highest-viewed videos are either compilations of ‘Top 10’ interesting moments or animal encounters, Tiger Woods‘s insane shots, or other funny encounters; the viewers know what they like. The PGA Tour also has a few funny and crazy captured moments at the top of their list, which does not count as any core sports coverage. Although Scottie Scheffler has been getting much fan support recently, he has not been able to reach the peak on the YouTube channel.

The Legends Tour, on the other hand, has mostly highlights of the great shots taken during the events as their trending videos. Although not restricted to any particular player, Legends Tour fans certainly like to revisit the key highlights of the tournament. But this is not the only time the PGA Tour has faced a hit this year. Its woes this season have been just continuous.
Rory McIlroy’s fears have started to come true
Earlier this year, McIlroy projected his worry about how the PGA Tour’s TV ratings were dropping alarmingly. He stated, “I know this isn’t a be-all, end-all, but if you look at the TV ratings of the PGA Tour this year, they’re down 20 percent across the board.”

McIlroy argued that when one-fifth of the viewership drops, it should be concerning for any tour. He also noticed that LIV Golf was not doing particularly well in the process either. Instead, he started showing a firm belief that the division of LIV and PGA Tour might have left the viewers in a tired state. He said, “I just think with the fighting and everything that’s gone on over the past couple years, people are just getting really fatigued of it, and it’s turning people off men’s professional golf, and that’s not a good thing for anyone.”
McIlroy’s comments on how the 20% drop for the PGA Tour certainly made it a jarring number for the PGA Tour. The YouTube subscriber difference simply adds to that. Do you think the PGA Tour will soon surpass the Legends Tour? Let us know in the comments below.
