Did Rory McIlroy just get one over Jay Monahan? The Irishman has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind, especially when it comes to golf. He’s been candid in both criticizing and acknowledging the efforts of various figures in the sport. But in the end, everyone in the community believes that McIlroy only wants what’s best for the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, Monahan & Co. didn’t have that same opinion a few months ago.
McIlroy was rejected for a position in the PGA Tour committee as the commissioner and his team didn’t believe the 35-year-old was the right man for the job. However, their recent statement suggests that they are following the same path the legendary golfer had recommended not that long ago.
The PGA Tour’s Instagram page posted an official statement that they have consulted the 47th POTUS, Donald Trump to assist them with the Public Investment Fund merger. This doesn’t come as a surprise to many considering Trump’s close association with LIV Golf and its players; especially Bryson DeChambeau.

Interestingly, this is exactly what McIlroy had recommended back in November 2024. The 27x PGA Tour champion had endorsed both Donald Trump and Elon Musk to help the PGA Tour progress in their merger with PIF. Let’s take a look at what Rory McIlroy had said.
Rory McIlroy’s advice to Jay Monahan & the PGA Tour
The long-standing delay in the PIF-PGA Tour merger had been bothering everyone involved. Jay Monahan & Greg Norman were in constant war over negotiations, with neither side being able to find a common ground. The players couldn’t contribute much as they were busy debating which league was better. In the dreaded times, Rory McIlroy had a special interview with the Guardian. Speaking about the PIF-PGA Tour merger issue, the Irishman has stated that he believes Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s involvement would help smooth the relationships between both parties.

Commenting on Donald Trump’s statement of negotiating a deal within 15 minutes, McIlroy said, “He might be able to”. The 4x major winner also added, “We might be able to do something if we can get Musk involved, too.” Explaining his reasoning behind endorsing the two individuals, the Irishman said, “Trump has a great relationship with Saudi Arabia. He’s got a great relationship with golf. He’s a lover of golf. So, maybe”. McIlroy seems to hint that Donald Trump’s overall influence and impact on golf makes him the perfect candidate to make it happen. Knowing that the 47th POTUS is also a great businessman, there is no doubt he knows how to strike a deal.
Considering Rory McIlroy’s foresight of the situation, do you think he would have added a lot of value if he was a part of the PGA Tour committee? Share your views in the comments section.
