Rory McIlroy’s divorce from wife Erica Stoll has been filed in Florida. The present state of affairs might start giving the star’s fans flashbacks of his last breakup with Caroline Wozniacki, which happened in 2014. Why? Well, the last few months have seen a massive jump in McIlroy’s professional performance, and it might just be a hint that history is trying to repeat itself.
With two consecutive wins in his bag from his last two starts at the Zurich Classic and Wells Fargo Championship, the Northern Irishman seems to be repeating his heartbreak history. At the Zurich Classic, he won in classic playoff fashion along with Shane Lowry, and at Quail Hollow, his 17 under did the trick. The golfer filed the papers today, but one could assume that he had known about the divorce for weeks! Channeling his separation aggression, the golfer did well on the greens and gave everyone a glimpse of what it was like for him back in 2014.
After his abrupt split with then-fiancée Caroline Wozniacki in 2014, the now-35-year-old went on a winning rampage. Probably in hopes of dealing with his emotions. After the split, the Belfast-born star went on to win the PGA Championship and the British Open. Not only the majors, he also won the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational that year. He carded other strong finishes that year too at the Deutsche Bank Championship (T5), BMW Championship (T8), and TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola (T2) after he broke off his engagement in May.

Considering the pre-emptive signs of improved performance as well as the soon-upcoming PGA Championship, it is highly expected that the 4-time major winner will channel his emotions into his attempt to score a fifth major win. A fan even went as far as to say, “Rory McIlroy shut out from re-joining the PGA Tour policy board and now filing for divorce, per @TMZ. If that doesn’t put you in f*ck-you-let’s-play-golf mode,” highlighting the rising expectations from the European star in light of his recent heartbreak.

Another fan was quick to highlight, “Getting rid of all distractions. Valhalla victory confirmed.” While it remains to be seen whether a Valhalla victory is on the cards for McIlroy or not, history is proof that heartbreaks serve McIlroy’s concentration levels well on course. Even though it remains unknown why he ended his 7-year-long marriage with his wife and mother, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, as the couple continues to value the privacy and safety of their child at the time, a drive down memory lane would reveal why the star ended his 2-year-long relationship and engagement with his ex.
Why did Rory McIlroy call it quits with Caroline Wozniacki?
The then-25-year-old ended things with the tennis star over a three-minute call quoting how she was not ready for marriage at the time. Sadly for her, this realization came to McIlroy after the wedding invites were rolled out. She was left hoping to “get a face-to-face or something” with McIlroy but her hopes remained hopes and were never actualized.

Addressing their public breakup, McIlroy said at the time, “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine. It was mutual and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I’ve said all that I need to say. Everyone has been through breakups, and it’s obviously very, very difficult. But look, I’m here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
In 2019, Wozniacki married retired NBA player David Lee in a lavish ceremony at Castiglion del Bosco in Tuscany. She is happily married and a mother of two. It remains to be seen whether McIlroy will have a similar optimistic and result-driven mindset after the end of this chapter of his life with Stoll, or whether things will take an unexpected shape. Only time can tell.
