Can Rory McIlroy finally break his major curse in 2025 with this momentum?

The PGA Tour has always been the place where Rory McIlroy played more than he did on the European side. His late start to the 2024 season did not translate to the success he had expected. The 35-year-old finished T66 at The American Express but in the next three starts, he started improving himself little by little and carded four back-to-back top 25. Still, McIlroy had been part of the five tournaments now, and he was far away from the winning circles.

But things changed at the Valero Texas Open, which he played after a year. McIlroy shot his first solo third on the PGA Tour in 2024 and bagged $634,800. It took McIlroy three more starts before he could win on the PGA Tour, albeit it was with his best of friends, Shane Lowry. The Northern Irishman made his Zurich Classic of New Orleans debut and enjoyed a check of $1,286,050 after winning it with Lowry.

Right in the next start, McIlroy made a record of winning the Wells Fargo Championship four times in his career and added another $3.6 million to his account. In the four majors, though, McIlroy’s best finish was the solo second at the US Open for $2,322,000. At the Masters, he was T22 ($175,599), T12 at the PGA Championship ($359,943) and he unfortunately missed the cut at the Open. Overall, McIlroy played 19 events on the PGA Tour, and in 15 of them, he finished top 25. All of this helped him to earn $10,893,790 on the PGA Tour.

But that was only on-course earnings. Courtesy of finishing T9 at the TOUR Championship and third on the Comcast Business Top 10, McIlroy got $1,608,333 and $4.8 million more, respectively. This brought his total 2024 earnings on the PGA Tour to $17,302,123 and fortunately, the money doesn’t stop just here for McIlroy.

Before teeing up on the PGA Tour, Rory McIlroy had already started his 2024 season on the DP World Tour at the Dubai Invitational. He made only seven starts on the DP World Tour. However, he fantastically finished in the top 3 in six tournaments and was top 25 in the lone one. The 4-time major champion carded a T2 at the Dubai Invitational and earned $207,837. The next week McIlroy was the defending champion at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and he successfully won the event again to bag another check of $1.53 million.

After earning millions on the PGA Tour, McIlroy returned to the DP World Tour at the Amgen Irish Open. He wanted to win the event but as his curse of near misses follows; he misses it again to be solo second ($627,521). The next big event for McIlroy was the BMW PGA Championship, where he was T2. From there, he earned $778,500. His worst performance on the DP World Tour in 2024 was at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where he finished T25 for $39,744.

After this scorecard, McIlroy redeemed himself in the last two playoff events on the DP World Tour. He was T3 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, accounting for a check of $567,000, and then won the DP World Tour Championship and bagged $3 million more as the winner’s payout. From DP World Tour he got $6,750,602. If this added to the on-course earnings of the PGA Tour, McIlroy earned $17,644,329 and, overall, earned $24,952,725.

With endorsements added to his 2024 earnings, McIlroy’s wealth went up from $262 million in 2023 to $299 million in 2024 and his net worth comes out to be $83 million. He is surely richer than many golfers like Tyrrell Hatton and is ranked as the world’s second-highest-paid golfer per Forbes.

The 2024 season was not the one where McIlroy broke his major curse, but he indeed had other memorable wins. With this momentum, he may win the majors in 2025 and expand his resume!
