With the $3 billion investment from SSG coming into the picture, the dynamics between the traditional league and Saudis have probably changed. Along with that, it has changed the opinions of many pros about the stagnant deal.
In his personal opinion, Spieth believes the traditional league no longer needs to follow the original deal with PIF. This opinion from Spieth caused the pros to split into two sections. Furthermore, this also led to the Northern Irishman removing himself from a group chat with top PGAT players.
It looked like the Irish golfer disagreed with his opinion. To clear the air, Spieth called the former board member and had an hour-long conversation with him. Sharing about his talks with the American golfer, McIlroy told Sports Illustrated, “I just want to remove myself from the fray a little bit.”

He further went on about why hearing a board member say they don’t need PIF is bad. Talking about why the PGA Tour needs PIF, McIlroy said, “They are still sitting out there with hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions, that they’re gonna pour it into the sport.” The Irish golfer said open criticism from the American golfer could lead to a sour taste in PIF’s mouth. “But if I were PIF and I was hearing that coming from here, the day after doing this SSG deal, it wouldn’t have made me too happy, I guess?” said McIlroy.
