Scottie Scheffler dominated most of the rounds in the FedEx Cup. This resulted in everyone beginning to calculate the 2022 Masters winner’s total prize money for the 2021-22 season. A win at East Lake Golf Course for Scheffler would have broken McIlroy’s 2019 record of $24.3 million.

However, with the Northern Irish star taking the lead late in the final round, Scheffler’s opportunity to break the record got denied.  McIlroy provided his fans with a performance worthy of making a record, which deserves to be appreciated.

Being considered a rich sport, golfers enjoy a hefty winning amount with consideration of their performance. With the 2022 Tour Championship providing the winner the biggest single-day paycheck in the history of the sport, it was apparent that the Tournament winner would take home a historical cheque.

Jordan Speith held the record for most money earned in a single PGA Tour season for four years until Rory McIlroy’s 2019 season. Though Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay came close to breaking the barrier, McIlroy’s winnings remained untouchable.

Will McIlroy’s $28 million record be ever broken? The answer is probably yes. With the Tour taking further measures to increase its prize money in the upcoming season, we may as well see a new player break the record for earning the most in a single PGA Tour season each year.

With the emergence of LIV Golf, both Tours have been in a bidding war to attract golfers. Considering his earnings on the course, it’s safe to say Rory McIlroy hardly wants any of the Saudi funds.
