Can Rickie Fowler finally break his major drought, or is it too late for a comeback?

There was one name this year that unexpectedly missed out on the FedEx Cup playoffs: Rickie Fowler. Yes, he had a pretty forgettable run this year, but if he could have tried, he might have made it to the trio of events, alas, he decided not to play anything after finishing 71st at The Open until the Sanderson Farms Championship. He finished T16 there, probably hinting that he is aiming to get better now, and even changed his equipment for that. Although, he was absent from the inaugural Black Desert Championship, but is now back in Sin City!

The 35-year-old will compete at the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas for a $7 million purse. He has already reached the TPC Summerlin and seems recharged. At the post-round presser of the Wednesday Pro-Am, Fowler shared his one true goal after his 2.5-month hiatus. When asked about his plans for the next five or ten years, Fowler talked about regaining his form.

Despite having six notable wins on the PGA Tour, he has never won a major. For him, his one true goal at the moment is to clinch the trophy at one of the major events on the men’s circuit while playing some good seasonal golf. Rickie Fowler came very close to clinching the trophy at the US Open last year. However, he ended the final round with a 75, aggregating to a 5-under, with a T5 finish. Nonetheless, a few months later, he bagged a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He had eight top-10 finishes in 2023, including his victory.

“For me being close in majors and then to having some — a few off years, getting back to playing a bit more how I did two seasons ago and just playing some good golf and put myself in position to win tournaments. You know, be nice to be able to have a major, if not multiple, on the resume by the time I’m done with this,” he added.

So why did he take a break from the Tour? It seems he needed to reset, and assess his childhood dream; “If you can remove yourself from a situation, because you always want more, but to go back and just think about ultimately what I wanted to do as a kid, my dream was just to play on the PGA Tour and win on the Tour,” he added.

Fowler’s first victory came twelve years ago. In May 2012, Fowler won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte on the first extra hole of a sudden-death playoff. So, you know he has already accomplished that goal. As the sphere of competition keeps evolving, golfers only want to accomplish more, and Fowler knows this. Hence, his goals regarding the majors come into play.

In the 2024 season, Rickie Fowler has appeared in twenty-one events and missed the cut in six of them. He has not finished in the top 10 in any of the events he played through the weekends. The Sanderson Farms Championship was his best finish of the year. Well, the upcoming one might be even better; at least that’s what he believes.

When asked how close he thinks he is to delivering his best form in Las Vegas this weekend, he said, “I mean, from what I got to see at Sanderson and getting back to it being—feeling a bit more simple.” The PGA Tour 2024 season only has a handful of events remaining before it concludes, and well, he is excited to try out his luck in the following week. He will also be treating these as practice rounds before the 2025 West Coast Swing begins in January and once again an opportunity for him to start afresh.

I’m not a young gun necessarily out here anymore, but I’ve got plenty more years left in front of me,” added the 35-year-old professional. Nonetheless, he is ready to put his best foot forward and battle through the coming events, making the cut and entering the weekend rounds.
