Witnessing the top names in the golf event competing head to head in the final rounds adds the thrill. However, since the beginning of the 2025 schedule, it’s kind of wild (and low-key stressful) seeing the top three world rankings compete. First, Scottie Scheffler had an accident during Christmas, which resulted in surgery and delayed participation.
Later, Xander Schauffele, who was part of the first event, withdrew due to injury concerns in his rib. In more, the world no. 3, Rory McIlroy has already cut down his participation at the event. Well, all this affected the tour largely as the viewership was seen dipping. Despite having Schauffele participating in the Sentry and Hideki Matsuyama finishing with a record-breaking score, the viewership saw a 34% decline.
However, now with the Genesis Invitational, the feat that every fan wanted to observe is here. Sharing the update, Justin Ray, head of content at Twenty-First Group posted on X. It read, “This is the first time that Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have both been in the top-4 entering the 3rd round of a PGA Tour event.” Both the golfers participated at the AT&T Pebble Beach and were even close after the first-round finish with 66 of McIlroy and 67 of Scheffler. However, later the lead between the two started to grow and the winner Northern Irishman was 8 positions above the World No.1.

A curious fan asked, “How about entering the 4th round? Has that never happened?” Well, yes, in 2022, when both the golfers were competing for the TOUR Championship. However, 3 years back, McIlroy won the event and Scheffler definitely would not want to repeat the nightmare.
