PGA Tour golfer Brian Harman just soared to fame after claiming the title at the 151st Open Championship on Sunday. The golfer had an incredible streak going, starting on Friday. He led the game since making the cut in round 2 and didn’t look back.
This was his first-ever win at a Major tournament, a much-awaited feat for the Pro golfer. Although he has won two times on the PGA Tour before, neither was at a major event. Therefore, this win means a lot to him. However, it is not his only accomplishment this week; with his recent victory, Harman saw yet another achievement: that of leveling with the great Tiger Woods.

The legendary golfer Tiger Woods set several records over the course of his professional career. Among them was his low score of 65 at Royal Liverpool at a par-72 Open Championship in 2006. It was hard to imagine that a golfer with no major wins in the past would not only match the GOAT golfer’s record score but surpass everyone’s expectations with his gameplay.
But that is exactly what Brian Harman did. On Sunday, he finished with a 13-under par. His lead started with round 2, and he followed with spectacular shots to amaze the golfing world. His scorecard read 67-65-69-70, with each round being under par. But that’s not all.
Harman set a 5-stroke lead to make the cut and followed that by expanding the gap between him and his runners-up in every subsequent round. He maintained at least five strokes over his opponents at all times until he finished round 4 with a six-shot lead over Tom Kim. This manner of creating distance in shots was last observed in 1934, when Henry Cotton also maintained a 5-shot lead and claimed his first Open Championship title. This proud moment is a hot topic on Twitter.

Harman matched many records this week and ensured that his name is carved in golfing history for more than one reason. Matching Tiger Woods’ 65 on a par-71 instead of a par-72 in itself was a significant moment, but he proved that he could take on more challenges in a single tournament.

After claiming his maiden major championship, Brian Harman gets to keep the infamous Claret Jug for a whole year. Along with it, he also took home $3 million in prize money and several accreditations for matching a number of records.
As the new golf season of 2023–24 is about to set off, the golfing community is left to wonder if this is the beginning of Harman’s era. He made several headlines over this weekend alone, and now the Open Championship winner’s fans will be looking forward to him claiming more titles along the way.
