Is Anthony Kim's legacy tarnished by the LIV Golf controversy, or does his past still shine bright?

The 2024 season has not been a good one for Anthony Kim. The American profession was away from professional golf for almost 12 years. He made his comeback as a wild card entry at the LIV Golf Jeddah in March, missing the first two events. This had already brought down his ranking, but he was happy to be back.

Kim began the season with a 53rd finish at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club and ended with a 36th finish at the Greenbrier. The concluding match ahead of the Individual Championship was his best finish so far, yet he failed to achieve even one rank above the top 35. This has dropped him down to 56th on the LIV Golf Individual standings. Now, this might be a huge risk for him, as Anthony Kim might once again have to disappear from the courses.

Players finishing 49th or below are relegated out of the breakaway league and are replaced by other standby players for the coming season. Chances are Kim might be among the nine players who will no longer get the opportunity to play in the 2025 LIV Golf schedule. He has nonetheless been receiving a lot of hate online for not being able to perform well.

This was when someone on Reddit posted, “Why Is There So Much Hate For Anthony Kim Now? I’ve noticed people are saying mean things about him for no reason. I know he admitted to having some addictions in the past. Why does everyone assume that he was a drug addict? People need to just give me a break.”

While you might think that this must have reversed the situation, with people commenting in favor of the 38-year-old LIV golfer, it was the other way around.

The golf community was aggravated by Anthony Kim’s support online

Anthony Kim has been pretty active on his X account. While some of his posts are extremely heartwarming, sharing stories of his daughter, whom he adores, or sharing struggles from his rehab days, the American professional often takes digs at everything, even matters that do not require his attention.

Whether it’s coming out of the closet for a couple, Donald Trump fighting the election, or calling out golf phenoms for not being ‘professional’, Kim has a take on everything. This is something that the golf community does not appreciate from a player who has been in the realm of the sport for so long.

Responding to this, one of them suggested that it was not entirely his performance that affected him; karma also played a role in his 2024 downfall. After being unnecessarily mean, which is brutal honesty from Kim’s point of view, he had to face the consequences. They wrote, “He’s an a**hole on socials so people are picking the low-hanging fruit in his life in return. It’s pretty simple. The internet does be like that.”

While one of them clearly explains why he gets so much hate, it is simply because of his X account posts, more than anything else. Anthony Kim and Brandel Chamblee have been having an ongoing rift since March. In one of the episodes of Country Club Adjacent, the 38-year-old even stated that people like Chamblee are everything that is wrong with the golf world. He also accused Chamblee of speaking irrelevant things without knowing them.

He was referring to a Golf Channel segment in which Chamblee was talking at length about what the Ryder Cup is like while sitting next to David Duval, who played in two Ryder Cups for the U.S. Well, he did humiliate the player on official platforms. Responding to this, one of them commented, “Look at his Twitter. One minute he’s like #gratitude #girldad and the next he’s calling Brandel Chamblee a p*ssy and starting beef. Kinda a**hole behavior lol.”

There was a time when Anthony Kim was so good at his game that he was regarded as Tiger Woods of his time. However, after trying to make a comeback following personal battles, Kim has pretty much faded away from the scene.

Taking to this, one of them wrote, “I don’t think most people hate him, I think most people just don’t care about him at all.” Another, echoing the same point, simply commented, “Yeah. He’s extremely combative on Twitter.”

After playing two events at the breakaway league, Anthony Kim was headed to the International Series in Macau by the Asian Tour with 24 other LIV Golfers. However, he still could not make his presence felt in the field. He made attempts to come close to Tiger Woods’ current performance and make another attempt to regain his status.

While the 48-year-old pro golfer might have gone below 900 in his ranking, Kim has failed to acquire any status on the OWGR list. Additionally, many people think that he is somehow still surviving because, unlike the PGA Tour events, LIV Golf has no cuts, and all the players advance to the final rounds. Responding to this, one of the fans commented, “He’s irrelevant as far as golf goes, he is on LIV, but nothing he has done has indicated he could make it on the Tour where performance matters. If LIV had cuts, he’d be cut every time.”
