Is the Masters at risk? Augusta National's bleak update has fans worried!

A powerful tropical cyclone called Hurricane Helene struck the Perry, Florida area yesterday at around 11:10 p.m. EDT, nearly claiming the lives of over 40 people, according to reports. The storm brought fierce wind gusts reaching 140 mph (225 km/h). Masters venue, the prestigious Augusta National also faced the wrath of the hurricane, worrying the community. The golf club’s Chairman has now provided a grim update.

Recently Augusta National shared a post on X saying “Our Augusta community has suffered catastrophic and historic impact from Hurricane Helene.” Following that he added a six-word update saying “We currently are assessing the effects at Augusta National Golf Club.” He further added how they are going to focus on their staff, neighbors, and business owners in Augusta.

“In the meantime, our focus and efforts are foremost with our staff, neighbors, and business owners in Augusta. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as well as everyone throughout Georgia and the Southeast who have been affected,” said Chairman Fred Ridley. Although it’s not confirmed how much damage it caused some reports suggest one of the state’s hardest-hit towns was the small hamlet of Augusta, the home of Augusta National Golf Club and site of the Masters.

It was a Category 4 cyclone which makes it one of the strongest hurricanes to hit Florida’s Big Bend region in recent history. Last year at the Masters, a similar incident occurred when strong winds uprooted several trees near the 17th hole which resulted in suspension of play. Thankfully the tropical cyclone is calm now but reports suggest that more than 150,000 are already without power in the area. However, it’s not the only damage it caused.

A user shared a post on X highlighting talking about it and said “My Daughters, in-laws house in Augusta GA. Anne made her husband Stan get out of bed with her at 5 am because they heard a crash in the living room. They got out of bed and seconds later a tree burst into the bedroom!” While locals are still recovering from the damage, let’s hope that it doesn’t cause more damage to the people.
