Oakland Hills Country Club is probably one of the most iconic courses in golfing history. It has been a host to several major championships in the past. However, a sad news related to the golf course broke on Thursday morning, which left every golfing fan in a moment of shock.

Notably, a huge loss has been incurred due to the fire that broke out at the clubhouse.

The Oakland Country Club clubhouse caught fire on Thursday morning to which the iconic clubhouse of the course was severely damaged. The backside of the building is severely damaged and according to the firefighters it needs to be redone.

The 36-holes golf course is a host to six US Opens, three PGA Championships as well as, a Ryder Cup. Truly, the golf course has an incredible legacy. The multi-story clubhouse includes a pro-shop, dining halls, locker rooms as well as, various other amenities.

The tall, white clubhouse which is probably one of the most incredible ones in golf underwent a renovation in 1999. The total cost of the renovation of the clubhouse is estimated at $16.25 million. This means that the total loss due to the fires will be approximately twice in today’s terms.

The South Course, which is the highlight of the 36-holes golf course, also underwent a renovation recently. The total cost of the renovation, which includes the removal of some trees, in order to see the iconic clubhouse from any point on the golf course, is $12 million. The golf course was recently awarded as the host of two US. Womens’ Opens in 2031 as well as, in 2042 by the USGA.

Golfing fraternity reacts to the sad news

After hearing the sad news relating to the Oakland Hills Country Club, various professionals reacted to the same. Jack Nicklaus, who won the 1991 US Senior Open at the same course. He said, “It is a sad day for the membership, but also for the countless people, like me, who respect and appreciate Oakland Hills.”

John Bodenhamer, the chief championships officer for the USGA also said in a statement, “Along with so many others in the golf community, we have special memories at this storied venue and look forward to making more in the coming years. We will support the club wherever possible in this rebuilding process.”
