The R&A recently sent a letter to the CEO of LIV Golf Investments, Greg Norman, stating that he was not invited to the R&A Celebration of Champions. Norman also responded to the letter in an interview, saying he was “disappointed“.

R&A Chief’s Statement in the 150th Open Press Conference

The R&A’s CEO, Martin Slumbers, answered a lot of questions at the 150th Open Press Conference. A reporter asked him about not inviting Greg Norman to the celebration. He also asked Slumbers what he expected Norman to do in return.

Slumbers answered, saying that this is a very important week for golf. He said, “We are absolutely determined to ensure that this goes down in history as the 150th open.” He talked about how they were trying to avoid the event being remembered for something unwanted.

Slumbers added, “We decided that we didn’t want the distraction… So there would have been another reason for that. So it was very clear to protect the integrity of this week. “

Greg Norman was highly disappointed when R&A sent him a letter asking him not to be a part of the Celebration of Champions. The presence of Norman in the event, according to the R&A, would have been a distraction given the ongoing controversy surrounding LIV Golf.

They said, “In response to enquiries regarding the R&A Celebration of Champions field and the champions’ dinner, we can confirm that we contacted Greg Norman to advise him that we decided not to invite him to attend on this occasion.”

However, Greg Norman was not happy after receiving the letter. He responded to the letter in an interview by saying that thought R&A was above the controversy.
