“Our guys hung in there like I knew they would. The first two days were key to us building our lead,” said Luke Donald, the 2023 Ryder Cup European Team Captain, after their victory in Rome. They needed four points from Sunday’s singles matches to beat Team USA. Shane Lowry concluded the event on the 18th hole with a 16.5-11.5 win. However, that was not the key action that led to the win last year.
In the opening round, Europe had already clinched a massive 4-0 lead over the American team. This boost in confidence for Europe had the opposite effect on Team USA, whose confidence dropped. The momentum continued, and the Europeans maintained their lead throughout the event. Max Homa made his debut for the American team, but unfortunately, it was as part of the losing side. However, it seems he shares a similar view to Luke Donald on last year’s match.

At the post-round press conference on Wednesday at the Royal Montreal Golf Club, Max Homa reflected on his experience at the 15th edition of the Presidents Cup. Despite a disappointing second half of the 2024 season, he was selected as part of the Captain’s pick, and he is eager to prove that the decision was the right one. During the presser, he was asked about the importance of starting with a strong opening to send a message to the opposing team.
Homa responded by recalling how Team USA failed to score against the European team on the first day of the Ryder Cup. “We got punched in the mouth the first day in Rome and that set the tone,” he said. That was what set the tone of the entire event according to him. From Scottie Scheffler to Xander Schauffele, some of the best golfers are part of Team USA. Having played in the event quite a few times earlier, they know how to keep the players motivated. “All of us on both teams are good enough to win our match. You could theoretically sweep, and that would be insane,” said Homa.
Homa also highlighted the significant roles played by captains Zach Johnson and Luke Donald at the Ryder Cup, noting that Jim Furyk is expected to have a huge impact on Team USA this week. “It’s just the talking point turns to, hey, there’s just a lot of golf left so don’t get down,” he concluded. Well, there is no doubt that Furyk has a solid game plan to retain the trophy in Montreal this year.

What is Team USA’s lesson from the Ryder Cup?
The most important lesson Team USA will take into Montreal is the significance of preparation. Before the Ryder Cup, the players had a month-long gap between the Tour Championship and the Ryder Cup, arriving in Rome only on the Monday of the tournament week. This year, however, the team will arrive much earlier, on Sunday, to acclimate to the environment.

This decision was taken by the players during the St. Jude Championship. “It’s kind of a captain’s dream to have those guys step up and make that decision on their own and push that,” said Furyk.
Additionally, while the U.S. team rested, the European team built momentum by participating in DP World Tour events. The U.S. team is determined to make the most of their practice rounds this time.
