It was not the first time in 2022 that the players defected to another league to follow a different set of rules, rules that aligned with their lives better. A similar transition happened in the game of golf around half a century ago, and that resulted in the creation of an iconic and remarkable league.

However, when LIV Golf came about with the motto to change the game of golf for the better, the PGA Tour and its loyalists were enraged by the idea and by those who supported it. The CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman, has now openly highlighted the hypocrisy shown by the PGA Tour when its existence is based on similar values.

After only two years of operation, LIV Golf has had a significant effect on the rebels, as the infamous feud between Rory McIlroy and LIV seemed to wander off. In a recent podcast, McIlroy accepted that he was a little judgmental at first but has now accepted LIV as part of the sport. This substantial U-turn taken by LIV’s most vocal critic represents, as Greg Norman said, “Time is the greatest healer” on the Fairway to Heaven‘s recent podcast episode.

Norman had believed that LIV Golf stood for what was right and thus, McIlroy backtracked. Moreover, they proved in only 22 events to “all the Rory McIlroys of the world that hey,” if they can massively impact the game in 2 years, imagine the scalability in the next 53 years “like the PGA Tour does.” The LIV head also noted how the PGA Tour came about decades ago when they broke off from the PGA of America and made their league.

He said, “When you roll the clock back 53-54 years to where we are here today, you know, we’re not the first ones who’ve done this, the PGA Tour have done it as well, too.” The recent revelation by Norman highlights astounding hypocritical behavior from the Tour.

The league’s existence is on the same framework as LIV Golf. Norman also pointed out that when the PGA Tour was trying to exist and big players like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer joined the Tour, the same type of wordology was used for them, like “they get poached away all this stuff.” The substantial change in McIlroy’s and LIV critics’ natures can be linked to LIV Golf’s recent and most expensive defector, Jon Rahm.

Jon Rahm becomes the ‘healer’ for Greg Norman’s league

After Jon Rahm signed the reported $566 million contract from the PIF-backed league, the reaction from the golf world and, more so, Irish golfer, McIlroy, was different. The 4x major champ, who at first judged the LIV defectors, now wanted the Ryder Cup to change the rules for Rahm’s eligibility for the 2025 edition.

Moreover, after the departure of Rahm from the PGA Tour, the world has seen many players come out and accept Rahm’s decision. It wasn’t the same just two years ago, when other golfers were highly condemned for doing the same. Although the merger deadline has been extended and Rahm is still suspended from the Tour, his seismic move proved to add another layer to the already complicated matter.
