John Daly celebrates his son's success while Tiger Woods waits—Is the new generation taking over?

It was all smiles for the Dalys on July 22. John Daly II had teed up at the Brook Hollow Club, one of the 19 qualifying sites for the 124th US Amateur Championship. The Dallas qualifying site had 16 spots to offer. The 21-year-old capitalized on the opportunity and shot a 2 under 68 to be in a four-way tie at 13th and secured his berth in the USGA-organized tournament.

John Daly could not witness his son’s achievement in person. Daly is tending to his golf duties across the pond in Scotland at the Trump-owned Turnberry Golf Course. However, that did not stop the veteran golfer from showing his support for his son. The 58-year-old shared a congratulatory post for his son on Instagram with the caption, Congrats to my son @johndalyll …he’s headed to @hazeltinenational for the US Amateur great playing!! Love you son!”

It was a sign that Daly II would take forward the legacy of his father but that hasn’t been the case for many, especially Tiger Woods. Charlie Woods made his USGA debut at the US Junior Amateur and played the first round of stroke play on July 22nd. Disappointingly, the 15-year-old finished T252 after carding 13 over 83 at the Oakland Hills North Course. Only the top 60 will move forward in the US Junior Amateur’s match play round and seemingly, Jr. Woods is far from it.

While Daly celebrates his son’s victory, the 15-time major winner will have to wait before Woods Jr. wins something to his name. Looking at the 2024 season trajectory of the two amateur golfers, who has had a better season so far?

A quick look back at John Daly II or Charlie Woods 2024 season

John Daly II and Charlie Woods started taking steps to make their way on the PGA Tour in the 2024 season. The 21-year-old ‘little John’, the Razorback collegiate golfer, made his professional debut at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Compliance Solutions Championship in June. He posted two rounds of 76-72 but unfortunately missed the cut.

Have an interesting take?

On the other hand, Charlie Woods faced repeated disappointment, as the 15-year-old competed at the Cognizant Classic and US Open’s qualifying sites. However, he couldn’t make it through either of them. Moreover, in his junior event, the Future Masters, Woods Jr. finished T101. Talking about finishes, except for his last start on KFT, Daly II has had two top 20 finishes in his last four starts, towering over Woods Jr.’s ordinary records in the 2024 season.

Undoubtedly, Daly II has been finding better results in his career, whereas Woods Jr. has been struggling to find his footing. There are four months left before the 2024 season ends, and it will be intriguing to see who will have better results by the end of it.
