A new tournament called the US Adaptive Open has been established by the USGA that allows golfers with disabilities to show their golfing skills to the world. The second edition of this event started this Monday and is being held at Pinehurst No. 6. The top name on the leaderboard is Irish golfer Conor Stone. In an interview given during the event, Stone revealed how the latest experience on a similar golf course helped him earn experience for this event.

Stone says: “We played the R&A’s G4D Open back in May over Woburn in England. And it’d be pretty similar to this. And it’s actually tighter than this. I walked off this course last year thinking, “Holy c**p. This is the tightest golf course I’ve ever played.” You know, OB Left, OB right, sweaty hands.

“But then I played in Woburn and it made me realize that this still is a tight golf course but it made this course look a lot wider than what it is. Woburn was good practice for this.” Woburn Golf Club is located near Central Milton Keynes which is at a distance of over an hour from London.

The Dublin-born golfer is giving an exemplary performance at Pinehurst. During its first round on Monday, he shot a 5-under 67 and is leading in his category as well as the men’s overall leaderboard. However, this is not the first time he has done well here.

Conor Stone’s last-year win and health issues

The US Adaptive Open had its inaugural session last year where Stone won in the male arm impairment category. However, Stone wasn’t even intending to come to the event this time round and was planning to withdraw because of his health issues. But since all bookings and reservations were made, he finally decided to come. After working with his physiotherapist on his back, the Irish golfer finally made it.

While he was in college, Conor was diagnosed with a progressive form of Kyphoscoliosis. And despite having surgery to correct his spine, Stone still suffers from pain in the back.

The surgery affected his flexibility and Stone spent two years in rehab to fix it. However, the lingering pain continued, and that wasn’t allowing him to swing clubs just two weeks ago. But his sportsmanship that inspired him to show up is worth praising. And with his amazing performance, it looks like he was glad that he came for the tournament.
