The LIV Golf Series has brought about a number of changes to golf itself. Other tours are now taking up measures to prevent their players from switching to the Saudi-backed league. New, lucrative tournaments have been lined up to go head-to-head against the cash-rich rebel league. But with 2022 at a close, many are confessing their true feelings about LIV golfers. While a small part of them still detest the cash-rich league, money has played a role.
American golfer, Joel Dahmen, was blatant in his thoughts on fellow golfers joining the PGA Tour. He took a jibe at their lucrative prizes in rather incompetitive surroundings, but confessed to some sort of jealousy among PGA golfers.
“There’s animosity, probably some jealousy as well,” Dahmen said. “That’s a lot of money they’re playing for.” The 35-year-old then revealed some players had already won more money than their career earnings on the PGA Tour. “There are some guys over there that have made a pile of cash in eight events and they never made a pile of cash on Tour. They weren’t very competitive at times,” he added.
Are PGA golfers envious of their LIV Golf counterparts?
The envy at LIV golfers is an expected outcome, considering the league’s lucrative purses on offer. In a matter of eight events, the PIF-funded league has handed out an eye-watering $255 million as the total purse in its inaugural season.
But there is more in store. Former Aussie golfer, Greg Norman, CEO of the LIV Golf Series, revealed his intentions to expand the league for the 2023 season. The upcoming season will consist of 14 events, with a tentative purse set at a whopping $405 million.
