All those defectors on the DP World Tour who went on to sign with LIV have often expressed their desire to play in the Ryder Cup. And the new merger has been a boon for them. According to the “framework agreement,” a ban will no longer be imposed on the LIV Players. And those who wish to reapply to their old circuit will be given a chance.

And European Tour pro Jordan Smith who is competing in this week’s 2023 Genesis Scottish Open expresses his views on the matter. In an exclusive interview, Smith has given some valuable insights. “There’s a few players that have p***** off a lot of people here,” Smith says.

But he realizes that bringing back those big names will also bring more revenue. He said, “Obviously, it would be great to see those guys back playing here. It would draw in crowds and they’re big names stars so it would help the tournaments.“

Revenue is a big factor for any tour and they appear willing to “establish a fair and objective process” for the players who want to reapply. This is a big decision after the European Tour heavily fined some of its players.

DP World Tour penalized big stars ruthlessly

After the commencement of LIV Golf, some players from the DP World Tour went over to play in the inaugural series of the Saudi League. It earned them great criticism from their tour which also imposed heavy penalties on 17 players, including Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Patrick Reed, Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer. 16 out of the 17 paid their fines except for Garcia who infamously resigned from the Tour and moved to LIV Golf and signed up for $40 million. But they all harbor the desire to play at the Ryder Cup.

Smith is currently busy preparing for the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club, North Berwick, Scotland. The tournament kicks off Thursday. Not just the defectors, the two-time DP World Tour winner himself wishes to play at the coveted Ryder Cup. I’m not thinking about it as much as I was at the start of the year but it’s something I want to achieve,” he said.
