Phil Mickelson calls Bryson DeChambeau a role model—do you agree with Lefty's high praise?

No other professional golfer in the world has 1 million subscribers on YouTube except for Bryson DeChambeau. The 2-time US Open champion has regained popularity among the masses and has become a fan favorite. His video with Donald Trump, which was the Break 50 challenge, was a huge success and the main reason why DeChambeau reached a million subscribers. In a span of a few months, the 30-year-old amassed a major victory at the US Open and became the top golf influencer in the world.

Even Phil Mickelson was left impressed by DeChambeau. Before teeing off at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Chicago, Lefty shared a few words about his fellow LIV Golf pro and praised him a lot, as he is on his way to start posting on his YouTube channel too. Mickelson expressed at the LIV Golf Chicago press conference that he is new to the platform and it was not something he grew up with. He added, “I’m kind of learning a lot from Bryson, who’s really spearheaded a phenomenal campaign on YouTube and a great following,” alluding to his fanbase not only on YouTube but also on Instagram, where he has 1.7 million followers.

Mickelson revealed that DeChambeau has given him many insights on how to make videos entertaining and relatable for people. He reiterated that the 2-time US Open champion has done exceptional work to grow his brand and engage with his fans. Although Mickelson himself has been an inspiring personality for many, this time Lefty looked up to DeChambeau as a role model. He relayed, “Like I say, Bryson has done a great job and somebody that I’m going to try to model after. Not that extent; I’m not going to be to that level, but it’s a great model to look up to.”

In the last three years, DeChambeau has slowly grown on YouTube. After moving to LIV Golf, DeChambeau cited the content freedom at LIV as one of the reasons for his move. He has proven himself with the latest success. The 30-year-old posts challenge videos with other golf content creators, drills, and instructions. Why does Mickelson want to start posting, and what will he share?

Taking inspiration from Bryson DeChambeau, Lefty inaugurates his first YT challenge

In early May, Phil Mickelson revealed that he would not be a TV golf analyst after his retirement but rather a YouTube star. He introduced the idea of hosting Pros vs. Schmos 9-hole matches while he was commenting smack. That idea is now in the works at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. The first match of Pros vs. Schmos will be played there, and that’s why Mickelson needed all the guidance from Bryson DeChambeau. Lefty explained that he saw it as a great opportunity to interact more intimately with his fans.

Not only that, the 45-time PGA Tour winner also wanted supporters to experience what it is like to play with professional golfers while someone is talking smack beside them. He said they would put a recreational golfer against a pro and see how the fans ” deal with the smack talk and deal with the challenge of the golf course and deal with all the things that go along with trying to play against some of the best in the world.”

Fans can register for the fun match on HyFlyers GC’s website and by sending them a video. If you are not selected this time, fret not! Mickelson revealed that there will be more matches in the off-season. He also relayed that through these videos, he hopes to let people enjoy golf more and give them instructions on how to play. Although Lefty himself isn’t aiming for DeChambeau-like success, he would surely hope to at least come closer to him.
