Fans react to the tweet of Phil Mickelson as the World Golf Championships comes to an end
The WGCs was the brainchild of former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. Finchem’s idea came in response to LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman’s not-so-successful attempt at starting a World Golf Tour in 1994.
Later, the International Federation of PGA Tours came into being as the PGA Tour colluded with European, Japanese, Australasian, and South African tours.
Golfer Jeff Maggert became the first WGC champion in 1999. Tiger Woods’ win followed his, dominating in three of the next four individual WGCs. Woods’ legacy in the World Golf Championships is unparalleled, as he has 18 individual WGC titles to his name.
Mickelson’s new tweet has received mixed reactions from fans. Some fans are looking forward to new ideas that the 52-year-old golfer has up his sleeves.

Meanwhile, some responses from netizens are not so welcoming. It seems like some fans are still miffed at Mickelson’s decision to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.

With the WGC-Match Play Coming to an End, What Does the Future Hold?
The first two WGCs to go were the Championship and the Invitational. On Sunday, the final WGC match play was played out at Austin Country Club. Today, the future of WGCs is unknown. The end of WGC-Match Play leaves behind a gap in the tour schedule. Barring the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup, there is no more match play remaining.
According to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, coming up with a new match-play event is not on the cards for the 2024 schedule, which is yet to be released to the public. However, he said that it was still a consideration going forward.

“Match play has been a staple out here. It’s been a staple on the DP World Tour..I think that there’s — that will certainly be a consideration as we go forward,” Moynahan remarked.
Several notable players have lamented the demise of WGCs as well. “Match play, other than what we see in team events, it’s fun. We obviously wouldn’t want it every week, just because of how volatile it is, and it’s not always the guy that’s playing the best that week..But yeah, I love match play. I would love to see a form of it be in the future on the Tour,” said Rickie Fowler.
