An incredible revelation about Phil Mickelson and the SGL

The 51-year-old professional received severe backlash after commenting on the Saudi-backed Golf League and the PGA Tour. Moreover, the lefty recently has asked the PGA Tour for a release from the PGA Tour to compete in the season opener of the Saudi Golf League. The first event of the rival tour will take place in June at the Centurion Club. According to the PGA Tour precedent, the PGA Tour’s commissioner Jay Monahan will allow the professionals to play one season opener.

However, he will not allow them to compete in the remaining events of the SGL as the events clash with the Tour events in North America. Five of the eight events of the rival tour will take place in America. As a result, they will cause further friction and legal battles between the Norman-led LIV series and the PGA Tour. Moreover, a recent report on Phil will leave all the fans baffled. The golf legend earlier said that he is using this opportunity as leverage against the PGA Tour.

According to a report by the Telegraph, that has caused strong speculations within the PGA Tour that Mickelson has signed an agreement to play all the eight events of the LIV Golf Invitational Series. As a result, Phil will have to face a legal battle when the Tour starts, suspending professionals for competing on the SGL.

Furthermore, another report suggests that the lefty has already received $30 million upfront. So he either has to participate in all the events or pay back the received amount with a possible penalty.

If the report holds, Mickelson will not join the likes of Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who have already said a no to playing on the rival tour. Moreover, this also means that he is risking his future on the PGA Tour, as it states that any involvement with the SGL will lead to a suspension, and likely a lifetime ban from the Tour.

Apart from Mickelson, Sergio Garica is also speculated to agree to play in the season opener. As a result, the Spanish professional will be risking his Ryder Cup chances to play at the opening event in June. Not to forget, the youngest player to play in the Ryder Cup. Moreover, World Number 15 Louis Oosthuizen has also asked for the same.

Other names to request the release include Ian Pulter, Lee Westwood, and Kevina Na. However, only time will tell whether the speculations will become a reality. At the same time, PGA Tour’s reaction to the same will also be interesting. Do you think the reports are accurate?
