Phil Mickelson is one of the finest golfers today. He joined LIV Golf in June this year and signed a huge contract. Leaving the PGA Tour behind, he received a lot of public scrutiny and backlash. But he did not give up on his decision, although being part of LIV came with its own challenges, including the huge setback, he just faced.

LIV Golf has been in news mostly for inviting PGA Tour members to join LIV, but it failed to get recognized by the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). This means that LIV Golf members are not eligible to be the part of the top 100 golfers. Golfers joining LIV were aware of it, but Mickelson suffered a huge loss.
The hurtful setback for Phil Mickelson
Even though LIV Golf gives great financial benefits, it has cost golfers losing their right to be awarded OWGR points. Mirror Sport made a list of golfers who suffered badly and Mickelson is on it.
Major championship winner, Mickelson, sued the PGA tour for not allowing him back on the tour. Even though he backed down from the lawsuit, his problems did not end there. He was the biggest name to join LIV, but he lost his world ranking rights.
Former PGA Tour member saw his popularity fall from great heights recently. He drifted 63 places and was pushed out of the top 100 list and landed in 134th position for the very first time since 1993. This came as a shock for Mickelson fans, and he is disheartened too.
Why did Mickelson join LIV Golf?

Mickelson has suffered many difficulties since he joined LIV Golf. But, now the question arises, what made him join LIV despite all the scrutiny?
He announced on Twitter about leaving the PGA tour and joining Saudi-backed LIV Golf for a fresh start. He loved playing for the PGA Tour for over three decades and he will miss it. But he needed this new format to play better and change his game on the global level. Mickelson joining LIV was not a surprise for anyone, as he was supporting the new tour since the beginning.
According to reports, he signed and accepted the LIV Golf invitational series for roughly $200 million.
