Phil Mickelson is one of the most controversial players in the sport of golf. The six-time major winner has made many records on the field. Mickelson recently joined the LIV Golf Series, after which he lost a lot of fans who support the PGA.

At a press conference at the US Open this year, reporters asked him questions related to various issues. Lefty talked about a lot of things, many of which were not related to golf. A reporter also asked him about playing on the courses that are owned by ex-POTUS Donald Trump. And Mickelson’s response to the question was rather safe.

Many players on the PGA Tour disregarded Mickelson’s presence on the field after his decision. However, there is one person who is concerned about Mickelson not playing on the PGA Tour. It is none other than Donald Trump, the former President of the United States. He was upset about Phil Mickelson not playing on the PGA Tour in 2022.

On the other hand, Mickelson knows how to avoid controversy when he wants to. When the reporter asked him about his feelings about playing the two remaining events on the courses owned by Donald Trump, he said“I care more about the quality of the test of golf.”

Lefty completely dodged the question by answering in a much more diplomatic way, explaining that the format of the game mattered more to him than who owned the course. He also mentioned that he was concerned about the quality of the golf course. Mickelson added, “the fan experience and their ability to see and view the golf, and the challenge of what the venue provides for the players…Risk-reward, exciting to see, birdie opportunities, tough pars. I care more about that.”

Donald Trump once gave clemency to Phil Mickelson’s friend and convicted gambler Billy Walters. It was a case of insider trading that allegedly involved Walters as well as Mickelson. A White House release mentioned Mickelson’s name along with Butch Harmon, David Feherty, and Peter Jacobsen and stated that all of them were supporters of the gambler.

However, Mickelson rejected the fact that he was involved in the trading activities and denied helping Walter get a commuted sentence. Mickelson’s attorney said that he had “nothing to do with this”. He also claimed that no calls or letters were sent by Lefty to the gambler.
