Phil Mickelson is one of the most controversial golfers today. The six-time major winner was among the first few players to join the LIV Golf league as soon as it came into existence. A major part of Mickelson’s golfing career comes from the PGA Tour. However, there are a lot of other things that the golf legend loves to do on the field other than just playing amazing golf. ‘Prankster’ Lefty once pranked his caddie on the course right before a tournament…and it was astonishing to say the least!

Phil Mickelson makes a deadly prank on his caddie

Mackay was on a podcast after Mickelson won the PGA Championship, and shared a story of how Lefty fooled him. Minutes before a major championship was about to commence, Mickelson convinced Mackay into believing that he was going to be put behind bars. It was during the 1997 US Open, and Mackay had picked up Mickelson to drive to the course.

He stated that after he reached the course, Mickelson went on to change his shoes while Mackay parked the car. “I’ve been there for about 10 minutes and there’s a tap on my shoulder… it’s two state troopers, who say, ‘Excuse me, sir, we’ve just been told that you were involved in a hit-and-run in the parking lot here,” Mackay explained.

He replied to the officers, “Hit and run? I was going a mile an hour!”. But they didn’t listen and asked Mackay to step out of the car. The whole range was staring at Mackay getting “arrested” for no reason. And the next moment, Mackay saw Mickelson peeking from “behind a tree laughing his rear-end off.”

Why did Mickelson prank his caddie?

Mickelson has a habit of pranking golfers on and off the field. And it was not surprising to see him do the same to his long-time caddie. Mackay said that Mickelson had a lot of things to do at the US Open. But he chose to “have a little fun with me.”…just what Mickelson is famous for!
