Have you ever seen Phil Mickelson shy away from a debate? The man thrives on being a part of a controversy. Whether it is his battle with Tiger Woods, his YouTube presence, or his interactions on social media, Mickelson always enjoys being in the thick of things. Especially when it comes to defending LIV Golf, the legend has always been at the front. Mickelson is seen guiding new golfers, assisting experienced players, and always promoting the league whenever he gets the opportunity.

The 54-year-old has also always come to LIV Golf’s defence. He fought off Rory McIlroy when the latter questioned the Saudi-based league’s eligibility to seek a merger with the PGA Tour. In the end, it was McIlroy who had to eat his words after he changed his mind about the merger. In fact, fans also asked the Irishman to apologize to Mickelson soon after the former made the statement about the merger.

This time around, Mickelson has gotten involved with another golf legend. Recently, Fred Couples confirmed that the 45x PGA Tour winner’s fellow LIV Golf pro, Brooks Koepka wants to come back to the PGA Tour. Couples said, “I love Brooks Koepka, and I’m not going to say anything extra except I talk to him all the time — ‘Where are you playing next? When are you going?’ — and all this stuff. He wants to come back. I will say that: I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour”.

The crew of Fore Play Podcast Plus, Frankie Borrelli and Trent, were joined by Cal Clutterbuck discussing Couples’ statement. They were surprised that the legend received a response from Phil Mickelson. Replying directly to NUCLR GOLF’s tweet that included Couples’s statement, the multi-time major winner said, “If it’s not true he damaged a relationship which he cares about. If it is true he took away Brook’s control of the timeline and narrative. Either way this is a low class jerk move by Fred.”

After reading out the tweet, Borrelli mentioned how Brooks Koepka was at a TGL match a few days ago. He has been actively trying to get involved with the PGA Tour players. Koepka even said “I wish I was out there with those guys”, when speaking about his TGL experience. This shows how much he misses his colleagues from the PGA Tour. Clutterbuck acknowledged Couples’ attitude as he loved the fact that the legend speaks his mind without bothering what others have to say.

However, he also criticized Mickelson later. Clutterbuck stated Phil Mickelson “is controversial on purpose”. He said that all of Mickelson’s gimmicks in front of an audience makes it seem like “He’s on a quest to become one of the most talked about figures in golf. Regardless of how much or how little or how well he does on the golf course”. The ice hockey player assumes that “He (Phil Mickelson) loves just being in the news”. In the end, Trent clarified that Mickelson ended up deleting his tweet and how that would lead to further controversies.

Phil Mickelson’s pursuit of fame off the course

A few months ago, Jon Rahm was a part of The Joe Pomp on YouTube where he discussed his team’s deal with Callaway. That’s when he mentioned how Phil Mickelson set the stage even before the Spaniard had approached the brand. “It almost all starts with Phil (Mickelson)” said Rahm as he acknowledged the golf legend’s efforts to improve the opportunities for LIV Golf pros. Just goes to show how far Mickelson’s reach is in everything related to golf. It also shows how the legend doesn’t shy away from helping his rival LIV Golf team as long as it’s good for the league.

He has also ventured into the YouTube golf space quite a number of times. A few weeks ago, he was featured in a video for Grant Horvart. But it was the teaser prior to the video that caught a lot of attention. Mickelson, at Dustin Johnson‘s expenses, teased a collaboration with Horvart for a YouTube video. This just shows that he doesn’t shy away from taking risks just to entertain his fans.

Considering all these facts, Phil Mickelson’s intent to indulge in a conversation with Fred Couples becomes a little more clear, don’t you think?
