It was in 2013 when a legendary victory at the Muirfield course became the history of golf. Phil Mickelson scored 66 and won the British Open. It was an epic moment for the team Phil, who had been waiting for that day. After his victory, his firm and supportive wife Amy stood there with her three kids to hug her husband. She fought breast cancer and defeated it. Despite all the tough times, she never failed to support her husband.

However, other than Amy and the kids, there was someone more on the team who could not stop himself from shedding tears. It was his caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay. In 2013, the duo was together for 20+ years. After the pro golfer finished his round of the British Open, Bones embraced the victory. The major championship winner was tearing up, whereas Mackay had a caddie sob on.

Why did ‘Bones’ shed tears for Phil Mickelson?

Mickelson’s victory overwhelmed Bones. He had already worked with the former PGA pro for 21 years. And Mickelson played the best round of golf that day. “You work for a guy for 21 years, it’s pretty cool when you see him playing the best round of golf you’ve ever seen him play in the last round to win the British Open.” It was one of the best of his career too, and Bones was proud. The former caddie later said that the victory resulted from sticking together through thick and thin. However, he was asked why he was in an emotional puddle following the win. His reply will touch your heart. Bones said“Because the first time I caddied for the guy, he didn’t have $10.”

John Wood was caddying for Hunter Mahan, the two World Golf Championship winner. He talked about Bones in the New York Times. In his appreciation, Wood said that very few people like Bones work for the golfer and make them the greatest they can be because most of the guys work for money.

It was a happy and emotional moment. Therefore, before the award ceremony, Mickelson’s wife appreciated Bones and said, “there aren’t really words to describe what he means not just to Phil but to our family.” Mickelson could not contain his happiness and said, “It’s probably the greatest round of my career.” He was not expecting to win the British Open, and winning was the best gift he could have asked for.

Why Bones and Mickelson parted ways in 2017?

In 2017, the pro golfer and Bones agreed to separate their paths. ESPN personality Bob Harig revealed the news. The duo was together for 25 years, winning 41 times on the PGA Tour. Mickelson’s younger brother, Tim, took over as his caddie then.

The major championship winner did not participate in the U.S. Open that year. Instead, he chose to attend his daughter’s graduation. And that is when he decided it was time for a change. Announcing the split, Mickelson said, “After 25 very rewarding and memorable years, Bones and I have mutually decided to end our player-caddie relationship.”
