The winner of 45 events on the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson is now a member of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. He has won six major championships and three Masters titles. He recently made a statement on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf rivalry. The golfer is once again in the headlines with his opinion about the feud. 

Because of the rivalry between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, they have been making changes on changes to stay in the competition and excel. Phil Mickelson likes how both the tours are trying hard to succeed and because of the increase in their competition, players are putting more effort into staying in the game.

Phil Mickelson appreciates the competition

As LIV Golf continues to try taking over the PGA Tour and signing several of their good players over time, the PGA Tour made changes to ace up their game and announced certain ‘enhancements’ from next season. The changes include higher tournament purses, an increase of Elevated Events from 2023, and guaranteed minimum earnings for PGA Tour members.

Mickelson credited LIV Golf, claiming that it forced the PGA Tour to level up. He said, “I don’t think anything like that would have happened without the leverage that LIV Golf has provided. “There was no leverage. There were no other options.”

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund funds LIV Golf and it could possibly further sign many high-profile players away from the PGA Tour. They even provided a variety of perks to players. Including lucrative guaranteed contracts, sizable purses, and a 54-hole tournament that has no cuts.

Mickelson said that there are positives and negatives to everything and here it is the same. Mickelson believes that players on both tours are happy about how things are going. He argued that every player will benefit from the increased competition.

Mickelson committed himself to LIV Golf when he accepted the offer and signed a contract of around $200 million. In August, they reportedly offered Tiger Woods around $700 million to $800 million. He declined the offer and instead remains one of the high-profile critics of LIV Golf in the game.
