Phil Mickelson's 'Lefty Magic'—Is he still the most exciting player to watch in golf?

After two major missed cuts, Phil Mickelson has finally crossed the cutline and will be playing the Sunday round of the 152nd Open. Indeed, it will be an enthralling round for Lefty as he may contend for his 7th major title, although the third round proved to be a struggle for the pro as he shot 1 over 72 to be 6 over par after the three rounds. Despite that, the LIV Golf Pro was still excited, and the reason is truly unique.

Taking to his X account, the 6-time major winner exclaimed his excitement to be paired with another left-handed golfer and it was none other than, the Genesis Scottish Open winner, Robert MacIntyre. Mickelson tagged the 2-time PGA Tour winner and appreciatively said, Playing with the long hitting, bomb dropping, Scottish Open winning fellow Lefty. Let’s go have a day!”

On the other hand, the Oban native also echoed similar joy when paired with Lefty. He shared his anticipation for the final round because Mickelson had been his inspiration since a young age. And to play with him was an honor for MacIntyre, as this pairing may not be seen again, at least not until 2025. Thus, the 27-year-old pro tweeted, “Final round alongside my childhood hero in front of a home support.”

The duo were T51 after the conclusion of the third round and will be teeing up at 4:50 a.m. EST (9:50 a.m. local time) at the Royal Troon Golf Club for the final round. Seeing Mickelson’s elation about being paired with another lefty made him win fans’ hearts once again.

Netizens cheer for Phil Mickelson and Robert MacIntyre’s final pairing

Remember the Big Three of the Oakland Athletics? Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, and Barry Zito? Well, the three might have split up in the early 2000s but at the 152nd Open Championship, Phil Mickelson and Robert MacIntyre channeled at least two of them, in the eyes of one enthusiastic fan, as they said, “Sweet. It will Be Mulder AND Zito!!! In the same group.”

Have an interesting take?

Undoubtedly, Mickelson has been the best left-hand golfer the golf world has ever witnessed. Unlike many left-handed players who choose to play golf with their right hand, the 54-year-old did the opposite and, despite being a right-handed man, became the infamous Lefty of the game of golf. Seemingly, a left-handed golfer is a rarity and the rarer it gets, the better it is! As this user claimed, “LFG!!! Left-handed golfers are the best golfers!!” Another viewer praised the two pros and excitedly said, “Two lefts really do make a right.” It was quite a miraculous sight!

After playing the third round, Mickelson addressed the press and explained the difficult situations at Royal Troon, including the winds, which have created chaos for the golfers. As he was finishing the interview, Lefty was asked about the final day and if he would put a wager on the left-handed golfer. In a light-hearted manner, Mickelson joked, “I’m not a betting man, as you know. I guess that’s probably not true.” Referring to the same incident, this fan asked the 6-time major winner, As a non betting man, how many fairways we hitting today.”

Will Mickelson finish in the top 10 at the Open Championship and will he wear the lucky joggers? Before teeing up for the second round, the 6-time major winner was seen wearing a different outfit than his usual one. The story behind the jogger was that Lefty made a bet with golf influencer Grant Hovart for an 18-hole head-to-head stroke. As Mickelson lost the match, he had to wear the joggers, which surprisingly didn’t disrupt his game, and he made the cut. Thus, this fan asked Lefty, “Joggers again???” Who knows? They might work wonders for Mickelson again and he gets to finish better than ever.

It surely be a redeeming sight to see the two left-handed golfers, one from PGA Tour and another from LIV Golf Bond, at the 152nd Open, who shot a low score to be in contention.
