The PGA Tour’s signature events are prestigious tournaments that every league pro aspires to win at least once in their lifetime. These 8 signature events are played throughout the season between the top-performing players from the previous year.
While most of the signature events are hosted by the PGA Tour, there are 3 championships that are associated with legends of the game. Considered the player-hosted signature events, these tournaments are played in honor of some of the greats of the sport.
The first of the 3 player-hosted signature events played during a season is The Genesis Invitational. The tournament is played in memory of Charlie Sifford, the first African American to play in the PGA Tour. Originally known as the Los Angeles Open, the tournament was the first PGA Tour event that Sifford won in 1926. Ever since the legend passed away in 2015, Tiger Woods has assumed responsibility for hosting the event. The GOAT has always been an admirer of Sifford as he considered him like his grandfather. Woods also named his son after Charlie Sifford.

The next player-hosted signature event to be played in 2025 is the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The event pays homage to one of the 3 legends of modern golf, Arnold Palmer. The golf legend considered the venue of the event as his home and hence the tournament’s name was changed from Florida Citrus Open Invitational & Bay Hill to the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The last player-hosted signature event of the season is the Memorial Tournament played in honor of Jack Nicklaus. The 73x PGA Tour winner wanted the event to pay respect to golfers who have contributed to the sport significantly. Unlike the other events, the Memorial Tournament was founded by Jack Nicklaus and is played on a course designed by the legend, the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
According to the official website of the PGA Tour, what makes all these player-hosted signature events different from the other 5 tournaments is that they have a cut after 36 holes. Only the top 50 and tied players who make the cut after the first 2 rounds are eligible to move to the 3rd round of the events.
