A total of 13 top-10 finishes, including 6 wins from 15 starts! Scottie Scheffler sure has dominated the headlines this year, all thanks to his incredible performance. But none of it would have been possible without his caddie Ted Scott’s help. A decision to call up the looper back in 2021 made all the difference, as the two currently enjoy immense success on the greens. Some might even dub him the best bagman on Tour. Wyndham Clark would, however, disagree!

The 30-year-old was spotted in an interview at the Castle Pines Golf Club for the upcoming BMW Championship to be held in August. While there Clark went ahead to dish out praises for his looper, all the while pointing out how fortunate he was to have John Ellis by his side.

“I am so blessed to have probably one of the best caddies,… on TOUR,” divulged the PGA Tour pro in the presser. He recounted how the looper had been the professional’s assistant coach for a year at the University of Oregon. The golfer also revealed how Ellis himself was a golfer and a great player; “He, for a while, played more majors and more PGA TOUR events than I did, so he was a very accomplished guy who just came short of really making it.” Interestingly, his bagman has 9 professional wins including 3 from the Canadian Tour.

The athlete highlighted the bagman’s experience on the course once again before attributing it to the success they have had on the greens. “That’s what I think has made our relationship so unique, is he has brought all the things he learned of why he didn’t make it and helped me in my game.” Clark also reminisced about his older days on Tour when he just joined. The Pro was, apparently, struggling with his temper and in handling his emotions. But Ellis’ words, fortunately, helped him; “He was there to say, Wyndham, I’ve gone down this path. Don’t do what I did. I was one of the best that never made it, and I don’t want you to be that person”

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am champ was all praise for the friendship that he shares with the 44-year-old. “He is older than me, so I look up to him,” disclosed Clark, “But yet I’m his boss and we’re also really good friends. So we have this great dynamic where our families hang out and we have so much fun together, and then inside the ropes, we’re really business-like.” The two sure have been successful on the course, seeing as how they garnered 3 wins on the circuit, including a major, not to mention the 5 top-10 finishes this year.

Such a connection was all the more possible owing to the professional career that Ellis boasted. Although he had a good start to his golfing dream, he couldn’t unfortunately make do on the same. This led the current looper to rethink his choices.

Born on October 8, 1979, Ellis attended the University of Oregon, where he played collegiate golf. The golfer turned pro in 2003, after which he won the Stockton Sports Commission Classic, the Corona Mazatlán Mexican PGA Championship, and the Telus Edmonton Open in 2008. This helped him reach a rank of 245, the highest he ever attained on the OWGR.

But Wyndham Clark’s future caddie failed to carry forward his momentum as time went on. He then played a total of nine events on the PGA Tour, making the cut in just two of them. Moreover, Ellis also missed the cut in both the U.S. Opens he appeared in, back in 2008 and 2011. Regardless, the experience he garnered was more than enough to help the current world No. 5 clinch a major of his own. No wonder he said, “Caddies are such an important part of our game, and I’m so fortunate to have John.”
