Is David Clifford the unsung hero behind Shane Lowry's iconic black-and-white look?

A yellow for Jack Nicklaus! A red for Tiger Woods! These colors have been closely associated with these two golfers, all for different reasons. But it’s not as if they are the only golfers who sport a certain hue on their attire. Enter Shane Lowry and his love for black and white. The reason? It’s all thanks to the Irishman’s love for Gaelic Football, not to mention David Clifford.

“Favorite athlete outside of golf,” asked Dan Rapaport in a rapid-fire SPEED GOLF interview with the PGA Tour Pro. Shane Lowry took a second and responded, “It’s a guy called David Clifford in Ireland. He plays Gaelic Football.” He didn’t stop there, for the 37-year-old also went ahead to dub the fellow Irish athlete as nothing short of a “legend.”

Clifford, meanwhile, is a club-level Irish Gaelic Footballer who plays as a corner-forward or full-forward for the Kerry County Team. He was even named the ‘GAA Footballer of the Year’ in 2022 and 2023, all thanks to his performances, which helped him lead his team to victory over others, including Clare, Tyrone, and Derry, among others.

Coming back to Shane Lowry, the golfer had previously conveyed his love for Gaelic Football despite excelling in the completely different game of golf. He had also divulged how the sport, which was a cross of soccer and rugby, was his father’s favorite, owing to which a young Lowry was introduced to the same by his dad.

That’s not all. Shane Lowry once also expressed his admiration for his childhood club, Clara GAA. Consequently, the 1-time major champ had once said, I tend to wear black and white a lot. I’m from Clara and our colors are black and white so that’s the reason.” Well, it seems the European golfer’s love for Gaelic Football and Clifford sure made its way into golf.

Have an interesting take?

I first wore it on a Sunday in Portugal a couple of years ago and that turned out well,” recounted the Irishman in an interview on Off The Ball Podcast. The PGA Tour Pro also pointed out how he followed the same style in the subsequent U.S. Open but for a completely different reason, despite him mainly doing it to express love for his hometown and club.

Back in 2015, a total of five Irish kids were tragically killed in an accident in California. Shane Lowry, in honor of the five, wore black throughout the major; “I think it was documented because of what happened in San Francisco and Berkeley so I just said I’d do that for four days just as a little tribute to those kids.” Regardless of the reasons he has had for choosing the different hues, the fans would surely agree with Lowry’s words; I think it looks good.” What do you think?
