It would indeed be a shock to see the return of Angel Cabrera. The former Masters Champion, after serving more than two years in prison, still harbors a burning desire to compete in professional tournaments. His ex-coach believes the veteran golfer “has learned his lessons, he wants to move on with his life,” and he wants to return to the competitive field again.

The Argentine golfer, who has 59 professional tournament wins under his belt, has been embroiled in legal battles since 2016, when his ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, accused him of physical assaults and verbal abuse. On top of that, his two ex-girlfriends also came forward later, accusing him of domestic violence, for which he was convicted in 2021. After serving prison sentences in two countries, the 54-year-old Argentine now wants to clean the slate and start anew.

Angel Cabrera was released from jail on August 4 after serving two concurrent sentences in Brazil and Argentina. Now back in Cordoba, his home turf, the 54-year-old golfer was practicing with his coach and friend Charlie Epps.

In a telephonic conversation with Golf Week, Epps revealed that the former Major winner is dreaming of a PGA Tour return and was practicing hard for that. In fact, the veteran golfer has shot under par in his last five rounds. Cabrera, interestingly enough, is also an honorary lifetime member of the DP World Tour.

Commenting on his recent form, he further added, “I think he’s in a great frame of mind for what he’s been through.” The Argentine golfer’s last professional appearance came in the Champions Tour title at the Pure Insurance Open in 2020. Through his admission through his coach, prison time has changed him personally. “Many say prison is bad, but it’s not the case; prison has done me good.

Incidentally, it was his last outing at Pebble Beach that prompted Interpol to issue a red alert notice against the veteran golfer. At that time, he was set to appear before the court on his charges. However, his trip abroad made him an international fugitive, which prompted the Brazilian police to arrest him on his return.

In July 2021, a Brazilian court sentenced him to two years in prison. Making the matter worse, another ex-girlfriend, Micaela Escuredo, also brought allegations of domestic violence against the 2007 U.S. Open champion. Cabrera pleaded guilty to the latter and was eventually transferred to an Argentinian prison.

It is yet unclear when the veteran Argentinian can return to the greens. Allegedly, the PGA Tour suspended him but is looking into the matter now. Moreover, it is also unclear if Augusta National has also withdrawn their invitation to the former champion. But if his friend’s words are to be believed, Angel Cabrera is betting against all odds to make a comeback.
